ALAN SHATTER HAS been selected as the Fine Gael candidate in the Dublin-Rathdown constituency.
The former justice minister defeated local councillor Neale Richmond and party activist John Kennedy at a selection convention held tonight.

First-time councillor Josepha Madigan, the only female in the race, has also been selected to run in the constituency, after Fine Gael headquarters instructed party members to pick one male and one female candidate.
The directive had put pressure on Shatter, who was seen to be facing tough competition from Richmond to be the male nominee.
Fine Gael TD Olivia Mitchell’s decision to retire from politics meant many of her supporters were thought to be backing Richmond, who worked for Mitchell and ran her election campaign in 2011.
As we reported in August, Shatter faced a further battle for members’ backing with many of his supporters having been moved into a neighbouring constituency.
The boundary redraw reduced the number of Fine Gael members in Dublin-Rathdown (formerly Dublin South) from over 400 to around 230 with some of Shatter’s supporters now moved into Dublin South-West.
His popularity locally has also waned in the wake of the various garda and justice controversies that forced him to resign from cabinet last year and the closure of a local garda station.

Distribute the overwhelming amount of wealth in this country evenly for a start, build social housing, create jobs outside of the major cities!! Scrap water charges. Implement a warmth tax etc.. Basically look after people who have who have suffered enough already in sacrificing themselves for a so called economic recovery! Which 90% haven’t felt..
@Supernova I was hoping for something more specific. Anyway on the distributing of the wealth more evenly and the wealth tax – it is easy to see how a Sinn Fein election victory would see a major flight of capital and multinational investment here. Add in a few notches off Eire Inc rating courtesy of a left govt and our borrowing costs would soar and decimate the surplus we currently have within our fiscal targets. You do realise if we split the wealth evenly among all citizens it would become uneven again after a time? Wonder why that is??
I’m not an economic expert nor am I a politician therefore I’m not in the position to give you specific details. But what I have mentioned is the basis of an alternative government, ie fair. And I don’t believe with your statement of capital and multinational investment taking off. That’s the type of scare mongering you hear on prime on a a Monday night. Company’s won’t just up and leave because a government is in favour of raising corporation tax for example. All sinn fein want to to do is take the burden of people who have suffered enough already as does any left leaning party. And if it means hitting the people who were never really affected in the first place by the recession and by our incompetent (right wing politicians) then so be it!

The numbers of millionaires has doubled, the numbers in consistent poverty has gone through the roof. Homelessness at record highs, child poverty increasing constantly. Support service for the poverty stricken completely unable to cope.

Christy, NAMA is subject to scrutiny by C&AG and PAC. I don’t remember this coming up at PAC during the week which I expect it would if it offered suffucient ammunition to the committee to corner Daly. No matter what business is done in Ireland you will always find links as it is such a small country. I would assume if there is a real evidence of corruption thay blogger could simply make a complaint to the Gardai. I would be amazed if senior NAMA officials were involved in corruption given the spotlight they are under.

Why? If it impacts his work as a politician it’s legitimate to raise it. Shatter was described by the Jerusalem Post as ‘a friend of Israel in the Irish Cabinet’. He proved it by forcing the Defence forces to buy Israeli military equipment. He also put the multiculturalism project for Ireland into overdrive while simultaneously defending the ‘Jewish character’ of Israel.
So yes, I think it’s legitimate to raise that angle.
De Valera was also called a friend of Israel Kevin. He has a forest in Israel planted in his honour. Did his friendships with Jews here and in Israel affect his work here as a politician?
That’s true Robert and I have no problem with anyone being a friend of Israel….. I’m certainly not one of those knee-jerk Israeli-bashers. But De Valera’s friendship was fundamentally different to that of Shatter. The latter, in common with virtually every other Jewish politician (and representative organisation) in Europe and the USA strongly supports mass immigration to White countries while opposing the same thing for Israel.
We have a legitimate interest in asking a politician who purports to represent us to explain his position given that it’s leading to the fundamental transformation of our countries.

I’ve never voted Fine Gael before, and wasn’t planning on doing so in 2016. But they’ve done such a solid job rebuilding the economy I really feel like it is the best thing to do for the good of the nation and my family’s future security and job opportunities.

this is where I vote. 4 of the incumbents are going for three seats. Shatter was the last elected. Ross will top poll. I imagine white will be gone to either sf or pbp. madigan more likely of the third seat than Richmond or shatter. neither are great. much of the trad fg vote is gone to dub south West so its anyones guess. matthews may get reelected
