Man goes shopping in Galway Tesco - on horseback

It’s Ballinasloe Horse Fair week – and apparently anything goes.

WHEN YOU’RE CASUALLY doing the big shop in Tesco you don’t expect to come across a horse calmly exiting the automatic doors.

But that’s exactly what happened in Ballinasloe, Galway yesterday:

ballinasloe Imgur Imgur

A possible explanation for the unique sighting might be the fact that the Ballinasloe Horse Fair is on in the town this week. Coincidence? Perhaps.

It’s Europe’s oldest horse festival, apparently:

ballinasloe2 Ballinasloe October Fair Ballinasloe October Fair

Local man Peter Toplis uploaded the image to Reddit yesterday evening, and told DailyEdge.ie that anything goes in the Galway town this week:

Strange things always happen in Ballinasloe during the horse fair.

The Snapchat shot has become seriously popular around Ballinasloe today, but Peter wasn’t the person to take it. He told DailyEdge.ie how he came to post it online, where it’s already amassed nearly 5,000 views in two hours:

I received it through a private message and it has gone viral around the town but nobody seems to know who took it.

So, the hero that went above and beyond to take this image is still a mystery and DailyEdge.ie would love to speak to them. Why was the horse there? Was it doing the weekly shop or just in for a few bits? Was it even well behaved?

The mystery of the Ballinasloe Tesco Horse of 2015 gets ever more intriguing.

A possible explanation would be the clients that the ballinasloe horse fair attracts rather than the fair itself. When Cheltenham is on I doubt if the local asda or sainsbury are packed with customers on horseback. Then again it’s their culture boss

Did you ask Pavee Point for a comment? I’m sure they must be horrified at the continuing cruel treatment of horses by Travellers… just as they were no doubt horrified at the brutal assault and imprisonment of the Corcoran family in Tipperary.

Ever think they what he is doing is actually perfectly legal? A horse can ride down the wrong side of a road and still be in the right no matter what. The law is a laughing stock , why anyone would be a Garda in this country is beyond belief, when some politically appointed brown nosed idiot is making up the rule book or using laws fromt the 1700 and 1800′s, disturbing as that sounds.
Also a lot of those shopping centres are described as public walkways but the shop units themselves are not.

Here’s a questions for ya I I wonder how many travellers houses got water meters ??

The Gardai were unable to stop the sulkies so how do you expect the ISPCA inspectors take the horses from them, you would end up with badly injured ISPCA inspectors and gardai trying to protect them. Garda management, yet again, have a very big question to answer. A couple of locals demonstrating against water meters being installed outside their properties will see the riot squad deployed but at a fair that every year sees huge amounts of lawbreaking and awful cases of animal cruelty they deploy far too few to effectively police it. Not giving a cent to the ISPCA only causes more hurt to animals that actually need help.

I’m glad to see the journal have not put a humorous twist on this like other media. There is nothing funny about the animal abuse that goes on at this fair every single year. The guards and ISPCA are outnumbered and intimidated by many of these vigilantes. The scenes on Sunday to reopen the trotting proved that as authorities had to bow down to these people as it got so out of control. If the fair cannot be run and controlled it should be called off. It’s gone so out of control over the years.

That horse was not calmly walking around Tesco, it was flogged, beaten and forced in the doors by the animals that were in charge of it apparently for a bet. Its not in the least bit funny for either the horse or the customers and staff of Tesco. For a great number of the people of the town of Ballinasloe we have had enough of these animals (not the horses or dogs) that come to our town every year and intimidate, rob, steal and fight for the week. The amount of animal cruelty is appaling and is a real source of embarrasment for the people of the town. The fair has been hijacked by a section of society and the Garda and security people are unable to control them. There was a riot in the fair green this week when the Guards tried to stop “these people” racing ponies on a concrete stretch of car park. Its time for the Fair and Festival people to re-think this festival and somehow discourage this element from attending.
