This Labour minister's tweet about abortion has kicked up a bit of a row

Renua general election candidate Patrick McKee called Aodhán Ó Ríordáin’s remark “disgusting”.

WHEN RENUA UNVEILED its latest member today, one Labour TD just couldn’t resist having a pop.

Dublin councillor Keith Redmond confirmed that he had left his former party, Fine Gael, after becoming fed up with its “nanny state tendencies”.

But soon after news of his defection broke, Minister of State for Equality Aodhán Ó Ríordáin tweeted a less than approving judgement on the move, saying Redmond had joined a party that thinks ”teenage pregnant rape victims should do what we say”.

The self-described libertarian views of Renua’s newest elected representative, he seemed to suggest, are in contradiction with prominent party members’ opposition to the eighth amendment.

Renua general election candidate Patrick McKee, who supports abortion in limited circumstances, was one of several people to criticise the Labour minister’s remark.

Renua has its genesis in the expulsion of leader Lucinda Creighton from Fine Gael after she voted against abortion legislation in 2013.

However, the party has said it will allow a free vote on issues of conscience.

Forget your signs.. Just do what Dublin has done. Flood the streets with jun*ies & pick pockets who only love to sneak up and whip your phone from your hand! Makes me look up more often!

The sign company must be giving out more brown envelopes. We have way too many signs and councils keep adding to that number. Procurement officers are never fired for corrupts payments yet evidence is all over the country. Cycle lane signs and Bus lane signs on the Merrion Road are over the top. There are 482 road signs between Merrion gates and Blackrock. Booterstown to Blackrock is littered with signs and road markings. Somebody is getting a kickback.

Yet drivers are forever crashing into the Merrion gates. Maybe it’s an underpass they need.

Sure all they need is a visual Street quiz, “What Seoul Street is this?”. The recent Dublin one made me realise how often we don’t look up. The Journal could offer their services!
