What is wrong with banking a childs support money to pay for college fees. I would have don’e the same thing if I could have afforded to. If a parent is working & paying tax that is ok but if they can afford to bank child support while living on welfare then they are getting more than the average person is while working, that then is a different story.

I also bank my child support money for her college education. Why shouldn’t she be entitled to it? My husband and I work very hard for our wages and pay an awful lot of tax. It’s the only thing we get back from the government and I think my daughter deserves this money. Children are supposed to be equal in this society, the money is for her, not me or her dad.

    Exactly Linda.

Children’s allowance is actually paid to the children, who have no other income by the way, so they can’t get taxed on it.

The money is paid to the parents in trust for the children.

Unless FG bring the tax bracket below €140/month for all earners, it’s impossible to tax children’s allowance

This nonsense comes up every year and no one bothers to find out the facts.

I don’t understand why anyone would object to a parent banking their child support allowance. If it’s for their children’s future. (ie) To help put them through college. To help with that deposit to buy their first home when they grow up. etc… After all it is then been used for the children its meant to be used for.

Christine, the calculator doesn’t take into account the charges in pay that will already affect public sector workers from 1st January as a result of the Lansdowne Road Agreement. There is a reduction in the rate of pension levy which will mean a reduction of 600€ p.a. from 1st January and an extra 400€ p.a from later in the year. These will increase public sector take home pay also in 2016.

It’s unfair on a child to be raised in poverty and some of us prefer not to weigh on the tax system and social welfare system by squeezing one out every few months.

I have friends who are teachers and see small kids coming to school with no lunch and usually had no breakfast either. So how is that fair on the kids. Even with children’s allowance those parents can’t afford to feed their kids.

Eimear seriously?! I work full time 37.5 hrs a week, im married an fortunate enough my husband also works… I have done so an paid my taxes on a full time wage for the last 15 years, I contribute to all those collecting social welfare… I WANT to have kids an my own family, im due a baby in 7 weeks, I do not receive any payment from my workplace of 10 years wile I take my maternity leave, I am however “entitled” to claim the MB of the state at €230 a week, which is taxed, this is the same amount somebody who has never worked a day in their life or contributed a penny to the system is also “entitled” to… so yes u bet ur bottom dollar I wil welcome tat Child benefit with open arms every month… why… because I’ve paid my way into it… And u or anybody else cant tell me any different. It’s as if benefits is free money to a vast majority claiming it, I’ve no problem helping out those in need but the system is milked to the gills and I won’t be punished for 1. Wanting to have my own family and 2. Because somebody behind a desk is handing out free money. There isn’t only 2 scales like u suggest of those well off and then those poverty stricken. Wer middle class, and I won’t be claiming to beat the band for free this and that. I will reduce my working week to part time an family members wil support so I cut the cost of ridiculous childcare and get to spend time with my child… These are mine an my husbands decisions and decisions tat sadly for you we are entitled to make! Excuse the rant but ur attitude regarding working people wanting kids is out of line in my opinion!

Think any social worker would confirm this. BTW, these kids usually have the latest electronic gadgetry thanks to our generous social welfare.
