New bingo hall creates 30 jobs in Cork

Rock Bingo is due to open shortly in Togher and is calling for applications for a range of positions including management, floor and security staff.

A NEW BINGO facility will create 30 new jobs in Cork this year.

The 1,000-seat Rock Bingo venue is due to open at the old Waters Glass premises in Togher, Cork, and the recruitment process for staff has begun. The Waters Glass facility closed last March with the loss of 16 jobs; it had employed 65 people at its peak.

The family-owned operation is being run by James Barber, his two sons and his brother. Barber says he had been “diligently looking for a new business” to replace the jobs lost at the premises earlier in the year.

The Bingo Rock operators say that bingo on this scale does not currently exist in Cork, but has been popular in Dublin and is enjoying a revival in recent years as a cost-effective night out.

Barber said: “In a recession you have to look for different types of opportunities and this venture will not only create jobs for the locality, provide funds to worthy causes but it also provides a new, fun and exciting entertainment centre for Cork people.”

The positions available include openings for management, floor, security, cashier, office, parking and cleaning staff. Job applications can be sent by email to dbarber@rockbingo.ie or by post to Dave Barber, Rock Bingo Club, Togher, Cork.

What next 112 jobs at a new betting shop chain, 20 jobs at a starch card factory, 1000 jobs at a Jonnie Blue fag factory in Mullingar???

    Smart economy my hole.

Nice to see that the owners still have plenty of money to invest after letting Waters Glass go into liquidation and the staff that were let go still have not received a penny. I for one would encourage people to boycott the place. They are only interested in themselves and not the community.

Word on the street is that the staff who lost their job are still waiting on any compensation. I did not work there but I am from the area. If they did get compensation then fair enough but this crowd are trying to look good creating 30 jobs but the same people ran a place that went bust with the loss of 65 jobs. It’s nice that they can just send a company into liquidation and open a new venture in the exact same premise.

If you had worked there & not just live near- by you would realise that for the year previous to the closure it was down to just 13 staff.Goverment pay redundency & if staff are still waiting this is then it’s down to Goverment.
It was revenue who started the process of closure & not the company.

But I’m sure the revenue didn’t just close it for no reason. The company was obviously run in a way that the revenue felt that they had to intervene. I can only guess what the reason was so won’t go further on that.

Obviously the owners are too mean to give some form of redundancy to former Waters employees, be it only a token for all the years that some of their employees worked there. You cannot start a new business with fresh air, so there must still be cash floating around for management.
