ONE SUBWAY CUSTOMER in Oregon got a bit of an unpleasant surprise earlier this month when he opened up a sandwich to find this dead rat inside.
Jay Armstead was given a full refund after the rodent was spotted wrapped up in his spinach.
“It was unfortunate I was the lucky recipient,” he told KGW.
It was wet and dead. His tail was curled up and you could see his two front teeth.
His friend, Matt Jones, claims to have seen the Subway employee dig the rat out of a bin before plopping it into the spinach, cheese and salami sandwich.
Jones posted the now-viral photo of the Italian sub on social media, saying, “Good thing we didn’t bite into it!”
“It’s the funniest thing I’ve ever seen, but it’s also the most disgusting thing I’ve ever seen,” he told KGW.
I laughed because I was like, there is no way this just happened.
Local health services official Cheryl Connell said the rat had come in bagged spinach and that the case posed no risk to public health.
“The investigation determined that the rodent problem did not come from inside the facility. It was probably in a bag of the bagged spinach product, not from the facility itself,” she said.
Everything was sanitised and cleaned properly afterwards.
Subway said the outlet in question had disposed of all its products and been given a “clean bill of health”.
The company apologised to the two men – and Armstead seems to be taking the whole episode on the chin, calling it just a “freak accident”.

Then again, it is the journal who, from time to time, have been known to exaggerate in articles.

How many people open and inspect their sandwich before eating. and how did deli man not realise. This is some guy looking for money.
They should put a 1 cent piece there to give use a more accurate representation of the massiveness of the rat.
As this is a slow news day, “allegedly ” should have been used in this article !
but sure don’t subway do up the rolls in front of you asking what bread ya want and what ya want in it..

It was a mouse, not a rat an the employee was the one who noticed it. It was at the bottom of a pile of spinach.
Ah sure there is always mice and rats in the subway in NYC.
Probably a field mouse that got caught up in the spinach harvesting machine.
Poor quality control at the spinach producers.

A rat so big it can hide behind a a spinach leaf. MASSIVE.. no.., although any size rat in my roll is too big. Prob healthier than the garbage served in them places
