Flooding in Cork City sees traffic diversions in place

Conditions have been improving in the past few hours.

THE RIVER LEE in Cork has today burst its bank, causing flooding and traffic diversions.

Heavy rain had seen vehicles redirected on Wandesford Quay, Lancaster Quay, South Terrance, Father Matthew Quay, Morrison’s Quay South Mall and Union Quay.

Conditions have reportedly improved in the past few hours.

Met Eireann is saying this evening that heavy rainfall is expected to move in a northerly direction, falling over Ulster before eventually subsiding.

Maximum temperatures are predicted to reach between 12C and 14C.

Gardaí were earlier warning of spot flooding in Monaghan on the N2 Dublin to Monaghan Road but this has now subsided.

Earlier this evening, vehicles from Cork City Fire Brigade were in attendance at the scene of the flooding.

Weren’t there serious question marks over planning in Cork…the inquiry was scrapped a few years ago…but there was a lot of building on flood plains that should never have happened…

It is a joke that our 2nd city is constantly flooding!!

UCC and others have actually built on flood plains with such an understanding of what they were doing, the lower levels were designed to allow a flow of flood water through them.

very hard to stop flooding in cork, when river levels combining with high tide raise water levels above the banks and come back up the street drain systems. unless you raise the ground level of the city,it will never be flood free

Its tidal flooding as opposed to flooding caused by exceptional rainfall. 5.00 am could see more flooding. But it will subside. Nothing new for cork.

High Tides combined with a full moon, an onshore wind and possibly upstream flooding behind the Iniscarra Dam will invariably lead to flooding in low lying areas of the city.
It is not as bad as it used to be in the 60′s and 70′s where every winter there were flood sales in Oliver Plunkett street.

The center of Cork is built on thirteen islands. The road system is built over the culverts separating these islands. The flood forces itself through the manholes as the Lee overflows. St. Finbarr and the later builders of Cork have a lot to answer for! For flood purposes the name Cork should be changed to “Uncorked”.

It would be quite easy to have the river flanked with low walls (dykes) and “sluice gates” to prevent ingress of water to be used on the few occasions when needed. They would only need to be used for about 15 minutes either side of very high tides.Yesterday we had a full moon near perigee along with a lot of rain so the flooding should have been expected..
If Cork City officials lived in the Netherlands they would all drown.
