Police force in Twitter storm after engaging in 'rape banter' about a football match

Merseyside Police have apologised and promised a ‘full investigation’.

MERSEYSIDE POLICE IN the UK have promised a full investigation after their Twitter account engaged in ‘rape banter’ about a Premier League football match.

The criticism comes after local team Everton defeated Sunderland 6-2 at their home ground in Liverpool.

Following the match, a Twitter user tweeted at Merseyside Police that there’d been “an incident of rape” at the ground this afternoon.

Rather than ignoring the tweet or admonishing the user for wasting police time, the force’s Twitter account responded with this now deleted tweet.

rape 1 Twitter / MerseyPolice Twitter / MerseyPolice / MerseyPolice

A second tweet to the force about a ‘rape’ involving the Chelsea football team also prompted a similar light-hearted response from the person manning the Twitter account.

rape 2 Twitter / MerseyPolice Twitter / MerseyPolice / MerseyPolice

Both tweets prompted a flood of complaints that the police force would treat sexual assault with such flippancy.

The account that sent the initial tweet has since been deleted while Merseyside Police issued an apology.

They have also promised an investigation into “the inappropriate use of the Merseyside Police Twitter account”.

I would like to agree with you but I think we are seeing the end of rape culture but it’s still there.

victim blaming and making jokes about rape that make light of the act of rape are all parts of rape culture.

No, rape culture is one which either condones or ignores rape and it’s effects.

What we have above is an example of the word being used in a football context for comedy. Just because it’s not a comedian doing it, doesn’t mean we should censor people from using the word.

So we’re just pretending that the British police weren’t complicit in facilitating and covering up the actual factual rape of minors by judges and politicians? We’re just going to pretend that the stats concerning how seriously the UK police treat sexual assault aren’t utterly atrocious.

This isn’t PC gone mad. The only mad thing here is the people who think that holding a POLICE FORCE to a standard where we would expect them not to flippantly joke about serious, violent crimes is somehow a bad idea.

They’re a POLICE FORCE!!! If you wanna debate black humour, and defend idiots making rape jokes in the pub that’s a debate for another day. But this is a POLOCE FORCE!!!

In all seriousness, though, I know the internet is a place for people who are perpetually offended to make mountains out of molehills and then get sassy when others think their sorrow is unjust, but I think they have a point here.

I don’t know. This really does rub me the wrong way. Rape’s a serious issue, and the people who, supposedly, are meant to look out for your protection are being so flippant about it makes me uneasy.

Like, imagine if you were a rape victim in Merseyside and the local cops were joking about this. Would you feel comfortable reporting your case to them?

At the very top a man uses the word ‘murder’ in the same way, we all do it. “Im knackered”, “I could murder…….” “jesus I just got raped by the taxman” and the list goes on.

The sad reality is getting all upset over this just convinces management to abandon the social media experiment and police are once again removed from interaction with the public, which of course the same whingers would then whinge about

it was inappropriate, but that’s life. Rape jokes will always exist because people find them funny, and you don;t get to control language and censor people. The same people that whinge about rape jokes, have no problems paying 40 quid a ticket to go and pay a comedian to do the same thing.

That’s the exact same logic people used to defend racist jokes. Throwing up your hands and saying “hey this is just how it is” is the laziest cop out, and usually only employed by people who don’t actually experience any negative side to them.

If the human race has always taken the favourite conservative viewpoint of “well, we can’t change that” we’d still be living in caves and dying by 23.

Conservatives opposing any kind of progress simply because they can’t understand it since it doesn’t affect them directly, or because they’re scared of change, or because they like to live in a world where they can say whatever the hell they want without consequence (spoiler alert: you can’t since we live in a society, not just as billions of individuals who do whatever the hells they want) are wild to me.

“We can’t end slavery, that’s just the way it is.”

“We can’t stop 12 year olds working in the mines, that’s just the way it is.”

That’s exactly what you sound like.

You’re making logical fallacies and countering my point with an unrelated assumption is not an argument. The reason you can’t stop it is because people are born with a sense of humour, it’s part of who we are. You can;t control what people find funny. That’s a realty you have to face. That’s beyond your control.

Rape jokes are plastered all over the wall of Pompeii from 2,000 years ago and graffiti all over the ancient world.

You may take the PC route if you like and stop publication, start investigations, witch-hunts, and keep it of mainstream publications. But you’l never stop it, and with the internet now, it has multiplied by almost infinity. Good luck controlling it.

Oh yeah, until the day your girlfriend/wife/sister/daughter is so unfortunate to experience rape, you won’t be throwing your hands up then saying to your friends down the pub, oh that’s just the way it is. It’s not appropriate is it? Get a grip.

Rape jokes are funny. Some anyway. Get over it. Everything relating to sex people find funny. If you’re offended by that, you need to work on it. I’m not going to stop finding some of them them funny whether you like it or not. What are you going to do about it? Shame people? Won;t work.

Duh! for all the keyboard heros here giving out about that we are too PC these days and can’t take a joke what if we changed the banter to talk about child abuse, abuse of OAP, abuse of any kind. Some of commentators are really not thinking at all. To all the survivors of rape out there reading this sorry some of us on Journal know it’s NOT a joke.

Hi Róisín, don’t you think there’s a possibility that it really has gone too far though? Rape is a horrible crime, no one disagrees there, but this joke (and Certainly not the response to it) doesn’t condone rape, or even trivialise it. When someone says ‘I got shot down’ they are not really comparing their rejection to the pain of someone getting shot. When someone says ‘I’d kill for a pancake’ they’re not really saying that killing is in any way acceptable or a light, trivial thing. It’s just hyperbole, colourful language; don’t you think we need to be smart enough to understand when a joke is harmful or not, rather than the moment the word ‘rape’ is mentioned immediately saying ‘that’s not okay’?

Not when it’s the cops ‘bantering’. They should have ignored the comment.

No, joking about an actual real crime with a real victim is tasteless, using a word found the the dictionary in a common manner is not
