Flights to UK cancelled as heavy fog lingers on runways

Knock-on delays are expected for other flights as low visibility procedures are in place.

A NUMBER OF flights to the UK have been cancelled this morning due to heavy fog affecting visibility.

The travel disruption began yesterday with Met Éireann issuing a fog warning for a number of areas across the country and airports here and in the UK advising passengers their flights may be affected.

This morning, six UK flights have already been cancelled according to head of external relations at the airport, Siobhán O’Donnell, who spoke to RTÉ’s Morning Ireland. She said low visibility procedures are also in place in Dublin Airport due to fog, which may cause some delays for other flights.

Check with your airline

All Irish airports are advising passengers to check with their airlines to ensure their flight is still due to depart.

In Shannon one London flight has already left, but passengers on later flights are being told to get in touch with their airlines.

Again today London airports are warning of disruptions as heavy fog lingers:

The fog is expected to lift later this morning, but knock-on delays are likely.

Roads

For those of you on the way to work this morning, there is also reduced visibility on the roads.

Motorists are being advised to use their fog lights and allow extra time for their journeys.

I missed an important meeting over this. My colleagues asked me weather I had my notes saved on the cloud, I told ‘em I didn’t have the foggiest.

I thought modern planes could land and take off in for using instruments only?

@alan yes they can land automatically without a problem in fog. That’s not the issue here. The problem is aircraft must have greater distances during take offs and landings in foggy conditions. Taxi time lengths are increased and aircraft must taxi at a slower rate. When this happens at an airport like London Heathrow which is already running at near 100% capacity, cancellations must occur and delays will happen.

Thanks for that Nik, so flights are cancelled due to capacity rather than they can’t take off or land? The extra space makes sense.

I thought there had to be a certain minimum visibility? Especially landing.
