Austrian granny shreds a million euro to spite her heirs

However, the bank said it will replace the cash to the family.

AN 85-YEAR-OLD Austrian woman cut almost €1 million into tiny pieces in an apparent attempt to spite her heirs.

Prosecutors described how €950,000, as well as savings accounts books, were found shredded on her bed after she died in a retirement home.

State prosecutor Erich Habitzl confirmed the discovery – first reported in the Kurier daily – but said that there was nothing he could do for the relatives. Habitzl told AFP:

The damage of the money in the woman’s property is not a criminal matter, so we have not begun any investigation.

Kurier reported however that the woman’s surviving family will have the last laugh, with Austria’s central bank (OeNB) saying it will replace all the cash.

“If the heirs can only find shreds of money and if the origin of the money is assured, then of course it can all be replaced,” Friedrich Hammerschmidt, deputy head of the OeNB cashier division, told Kurier.

“If we didn’t pay out the money then we would be punishing the wrong people.”

What’s a RIB doing out so late at night? Why didn’t it have a chart, a GPS, VHF and a depth sounder? Why didn’t they phone for help? In Ireland and the UK, as opposed to the rest of Europe, any fool can drive a RIB. No licence is needed and no training. It’s about time that stopped.

I suspect there was some bevvies involved! Lots of people have done that en route back from town by night. It’s a very tight channel. Why the need for all the drama? Put out an anchor and wait for the tide to re float the boat (which is essentially what the lifeboat did). Foolish getting into the mud to push off, as you can sink into it. I bet they’re embarrassed today.

They ran aground? So getting out and f*cking walking wasn’t an option?

I’m sure that was in their initial plan Niall but what you obviously aren’t aware of is that the mud is several Metres thick so it would have been suicide to just “walk” off
