Just how popular is Snapchat video right now? It now generates 6 billion views a day

The figure has tripled in the space of six months.

SNAPCHAT’S DECISION TO ramp up its efforts in video is paying off as its daily views have tripled in the space of six months.

The app now sees more than six billion video views happening every day, an increase from the two billion daily video views back in May. The company confirmed the figure to the Financial Times but declined to comment further.

The figure is still behind Facebook’s eight billion views – its CEO Mark Zuckerberg saying that 500 million people watch video on its site and app every day – but Facebook has 1.01 billion daily active users compared to Snapchat’s 100 million daily active users. It says that over 60% of those who use it daily upload photos and videos.

Although the definition of a view differs from service to service. While YouTube counts 30 seconds or over as a view, Facebook only counts three seconds or over while Snapchat only needs a video to be loaded for it to count.

The latter two are making a significant push into video because of the potential increase in revenue it brings.

Snapchat famously rejected a $3 billion offer from Facebook back in 2013, with many questioning the decision.

Now it is one of the most popular social apps out there with a payments service in the US, the introduction of Snapchat Stories which allows users to post video and clips for 24 hours and Discover, its partnership with media outlets like Vice, Sky Sports, Buzzfeed and National Geographic.

It recently had to clarify updates to its terms of service and privacy policy after it caused confusion among users. In an update explaining the changes, it said that all photo and video messages are automatically deleted from its servers and that the user has ownership of them.

… and I wonder, if they did, would the Filipinos write belittling letters to their online newspapers about it.

@MurtyMac: not belittling the death at all. Tragic loss of life. Just wondering why Irish media are reporting on this.

Fully expect to see responses like ‘well you don’t have to read articles on a free site…set up your own site’ blah blah blah.

@Onion Knight: Was there myself last year so I had an interest. Maybe if you spent less time commenting on articles that dont interest you you’d find more articles that do interest you? Or in your words – “blah blah blah”.

@Onion Knight: If someone was eaten by a crocodile in Ireland I would imagine that would be big news!

Many years ago I was driving with a friend in Tanzania. We came to a bridge which was flooded so we started to push the car off the bridge. I happened to glance back and saw a crocodile heading rapidly for his lunch which was me. I jumped on to the roof of the car like an Olympic athlete. The crocodile glanced at me for a while and then he went off to a different lunch. That was the closest to death that I have been so far. Maybe I do have a guardian angel after all.
