Saoirse Ronan's new film was a massive hit at the Irish and UK box-offices this weekend

Fair play.

THE FILM ADAPTATION of Colm Tóibín’s novel Brooklyn proved a hit at the Irish and UK box offices, raking in over €1.4 million.

The film, which has been tipped to be a contender at next year’s Oscars, stars Saoirse Ronan, Domhnall Gleeson, Emory Cohen, Jim Broadbent and Julie Walters and was adapted by novelist Nick Hornby.

It follows a young girl who moves from small town Ireland to Brooklyn, New York where, unlike home, she has the opportunity for work and for a future and love.

The film took £1,041,278 (Over €1.4 million) at the UK and Ireland combined, meaning it is the highest opener and third-highest grossing film for this past weekend.

Its sterling take is one of the largest for an Irish film ever and it opened on more screens – 87 – than any Irish film ever besides last year’s monster hit Mrs Brown’s Boys D’Movie.

Following its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January, and having since played at the Toronto International Film Festival, the film has been nominated for five Moët British Independent Film Awards including Best Actress, Best Screenplay, Best Supporting Actress, Best Supporting Actor and Outstanding Achievement in Craft for casting.

The film also opened on five screens in the US last Wednesday and has taken in $237,000.

Normal for this to happen prior to wider distribution. Many films that have won or been nominated for Oscars go on limited release to be sure they don’t miss out on the cut off date for Oscar noms.

I find Ronan, insufferable and pretentious, she said she cried when she watched the film herself. Suppose I’d cry myself if I had to watch it.

Stephen I find Saoirse Ronan when I have seen her being interviewed entirely herself and entirely down to earth and natural. But this being Ireland I suppose someone has to chop a successful young actor down to size.

I find her mature, thoughtful and serious about her job. Instead of knocking her down which I know is a great Irish trait we should be lauding this 21 year old who is well on her way to becoming one of Ireland’s most successful actors.

Ha you could of fooled me. It just so happens I’m no “parochial redneck”. I’m well educated Londoner (no parish in sight) well travelled, raised in affluence and successful. i just don’t understand the Irish resentment towards their own success stories. If you dislike Saoirse Ronan that’s fine but there’s no need to come here and make hostile comments regarding a young lady and that goes for everyone else. I relish in everyone’s successes. You should try it too ;))

Box office=tickets sold against film budget. The film is currently on limited released in US before being rolled out nationwide in late November; UK AND Eire full release. €10 million is nothing, it will make it back in no time. Brooklyn will be expanding in to other markets in 2016.
