In Limerick, the city and county council has advised the public to exercise extreme caution over the next 24 hours.

Members of the public are advised to remain indoors where possible during the storm and to stay away from rivers and other water bodies. The Council is on full alert and will respond to emergencies as they arise or as it is safe to do so.

Winds are expected to become very strong in most places, reaching gale force strength on exposed coasts. Rain in the west will spread to all areas by early afternoon with some heavy rainfall and thunder in places.

Hail showers will affect the western part of the country tonight and it will turn cold, with lowest temperatures dropping to between 2 and 4 degrees.

Just saw coast guard helicopter heading north west from Baldonnal I would say it’s the start of a busy day for them. Best of luck to all at sea today.
