MAIRIA CAHILL HAS said her involvement with an organisation opposed to the PSNI and the Good Friday Agreement was “the wrong thing to do” and a decision which she “deeply regrets’ and is “deeply sorry” for.
The Labour Seanad by-election candidate was speaking to RTÉ as she ended weeks of silence about her links to the Republican Network for Unity (RNU).
She has faced criticism in recent days for her refusal to address questions about her involvement with the RNU for a number of months in 2010.
“I am the first person to say it was the wrong thing to do, I regret it deeply and I am deeply sorry for it,” she told Philip Boucher-Hayes on Radio One’s Drivetime programme this evening.

Cahill’s refusal to comment in recent weeks has been criticised by Catherine McCartney, the sister of the late Robert McCartney, who was allegedly murdered by the Provisional IRA ten years ago, and the independent Seanad candidate Jerry Beades.
Speaking to RTÉ, Cahill said she joined the organisation in 2010 having been at a “very difficult point in my life” when “every aspect” of her abuse came back to her having watched a documentary about the abuse of Aine Adams.
Cahill said her life “went into a spiral”, describing joining the RNU as “completely the wrong thing to do”. She discussed how she had been suicidal and self-harmed.
On her brief spell as the organisation’s national secretary, Cahill explained that she had no prior notice that her name was being proposed for the position.
After she was voted in she decided “two or three hours later” that she didn’t want it and said being pregnant at the time was among the reasons why she refused the post. She added:
At that time I wasn’t really thinking what the RNU was.
Cahill said she would no longer considered herself a republican and that the national question does not have “much relevance on the ground” at the moment. She also said she did not accept the legitimacy of the armed struggle in the North. She added:
I think people should be allowed to move on once they take responsibility for something.
Earlier, the Tánaiste Joan Burton defended Cahill, who she anticipates will win the election tomorrow, insisting:
She will bring to the Seanad a new voice, particularly in relation to issues of young people getting employment and the development of social enterprise, areas she has been very involved in.
Other by-election candidates include Beades, who is a former Fianna Fáil activist. Fianna Fáil itself is running Mayo GP Keith Swanick, while Sinn Féin has put forward Meath councillor Sinead Burke.
Fine Gael has formally thrown its support behind Cahill meaning she is almost certain to take the seat vacated by the retiring Labour senator Jimmy Harte.
A survey of Fine Gael TDs and Senators shows that the recent controversy over Cahill’s involvement with the RNU has seemingly not impacted her level support among the senior coalition partner.
Of the 20 Fine Gael Oireachtas members who responded to queries from TheJournal.ie today, 19 said they had backed Cahill, while one said they had spoiled their ballot.

Not to mention the way the Gov treated Louise O’Keeffe. The Gov fought long and hard to avoid taking responsibility for the abuse she (and many others) suffered. I actually cannot really believe the stupidity of what Labour are doing here. It’s absolutely mind boggling how stupid they are. They were already due a bettering in the polls but this is just quite incredibly altogether and the electorate will hopefully wipe this pathetic excuse for a party out. I could nearly understand them compromising on everything they ever believed in when they got elected just to keep themselves in power and feathering their own nests but this stunt is just a whole other level.

After everything revealed this week, if there is any respect for the Irish constitution her nomination must be withdrawn.
On what basis?
Martin Ferris TD represents the people of North Kerry. He was a former member of the IRA, as is well documented. He was convicted (twice) of terrorist offences, served his time and was released.
He is eligible to stand for election, and the people of North Kerry are entitled to vote for him if they wish.
Can you explain why it should be different for Mairia Cahill?Should the entitlement to stand not be afforded to all former members of terrorist organisation? Or just some?
Martin Ferris was member of the IRA pre GFA, he is also democratically elected by the people as well as being elected as a local councillor for 12 years prior to that. Cahill rejected the GFA agreement and was part of a dissident group up until relatively recently. The same group that the lad who shot the Garda a few weeks back was allegedly part of. She is being catapulted into the houses of the Oireachtas and on to a committee in which she has no experience whatsoever. That’s the difference

Nothing you have said has anything to do with why someone would be constitutionally barred, which the original poster is saying.
I don’t get how someone who had peripheral involvement with one organisation should be barred, but someone who was very involved with another shouldn’t be.
Just on the basis of duration? Cahill’s involvement was more recent – therefore she should be barred?
Another major point is that as a member of the Seanad she will be part of the process that enacts laws within the State. If she is to make those laws then she also has to uphold those laws both here and in other jurisdictions. She instigated a police investigation in NI, went to court and then refused to go through with a trial and cross examination. As a result the people that were accused were found not guilty and so must be declared innocent of the crimes that they were accused of.
Yet Cahill states on her twitter page “Given a voice (BBCNI Spotlight) to expose my sexual abuse by Martin Morris ” Martin Morris was found not guilty by a court of law yet Cahill ignores this and continues to accuse him of rape. If she is to be part of the law making apparatus of this jurisdiction then she will either have to abide by the rulings of courts of law or else her position will be untenable. If a Senator chooses to ignore the rulings of courts and the laws of the land then how can they be taken seriously in the the forums that make those laws?
Actually Barry, her appointment may well be unconstitutional. There is a requirement that she has knowledge in the area of industry and commerce.

You can’t have it both ways, For Connolly.
If you want to invoke the constitution to try to denigrate Mairia Cahill, you can’t then ignore the constitution when trying to claim that there is a difference between how TDs and Senators are elected.
They are both elected democratically, through the mechanisms imposed by the constitution. Either you respect the constitution or you don’t.
Trying to say that TDs with a history of membership of illegal organisations are somehow magically valid while Senators aren’t is massively inconsistent.
Barry there is a major difference between opposing water charges and continuing to accuse someone of serious crimes after they have been cleared in a court of law. Your argument doesn’t hold water anyway (sorry couldn’t resist it) as the water charges are a law brought in by the government and are not a ruling by a court of law. The charges against the people accused by Cahill were brought before a sitting court which subsequently found them not guilty of the charges. Cahill has ignored the ruling of the court and still continues with her allegations in a trial by media.
Barry having ex-Ira pro GFA politicians in Leinster house isn’t exactly great, but I fail to see how bringing dissident anti-agreement fringe loony republicans into the political fold is going to improve matters.
It just shows that the political establishment down here would willingly throw the north back into several more decades of unrest in order to reduce SFs vote by a few % down here. Typically myopia and lack of vision that has become a hallmark of this government.

I never said it would improve matters. I’m not sure she’s a great candidate. But I don’t for one second buy the nonsense argument that she should be barred while other former members of illegal organisations (some convicted of far more serious crimes) shouldn’t.

I actually feel sorry for her, she has every prck in the Dáil using her and is so blinded by bitterness she can’t even see it, the whole episode from start to finish has been childish and makes a mockery (in addition to the sorry state it’s already in) of Irish politics. There is no doubt that she was fully involved in the internal intrigues and infighting at the top echelons of RNU substantiated her infamous correspondence complaining about outside influences and pointing the finger at another senior member as being ‘suspect’ etc.
So question is for anyone who buys the Maria Cahill’- I was naive and vulnerable at the time line is to ask themselves the question as to why a conspiratorial organisation such as the RNU. with its armed ONH wing, would propose and entrust her for the role of National Secretary of their organisation in the first place if she has just had the transient and peripheral role that she is now pretending she had?
This sums up Irish politics – opportunism to distract from a party’s own problems (Labour) by trying to undermine another party (SF) with a candidate whose selection looks unwise for an institution that is undemocratic and irrelevent. This is the political process in Ireland. Do not intelligently debate the actual issues, no matter which party you belong to. Just hammer away at the opposition and avoid acknowledging your party’s own responsibility. A useless, utterly predictable, unaccountable public debate of what is going on and what it means and what the consequences are. Just keep going through the motions and cling on to ‘power’ as long as possible. Switching government and opposition parties won’t make any real difference, because the institutions and processes need radical overhaul to function properly.
