Crucifixion and electrocution - the horrendous conditions of Ibrahim Halawa's captivity

The Dublin teenager is now on hunger strike, and says he will remain so until he is released.

ibra Ibrahim Halawa

IBRAHIM HALAWA, THE Dublin teenager who has been imprisoned in Egypt for more than two years under the shadow of a possible death penalty, has spoken out regarding the circumstances of his imprisonment.

In a letter to his family, Ibrahim (19) describes the ‘experimental torture’ carried out in the jail in which he’s imprisoned.

This torture, according to a caseworker from Reprieve (a human rights organisation) who recently met with Halawa, includes prisoners being strapped naked in crucifix positions in the prison halls, and water electrocution, while Ibrahim himself has been subject to repeat beatings with rubber bars.

In the letter Ibrahim bemoans the corruption of the Egyptian judicial system, and says that being part of a mass trial as he has repeatedly been will never grant him his freedom.

Instead, he says he is merely “waiting in a queue for my turn on a death rope”.

The letter also serves to confirm that Ibrahim is currently on hunger strike, and has been so for at least 20 days.

A statement from Reprieve claims that Ibrahim’s health is failing as a combination result of his hunger strike and the poor conditions in which he is imprisoned.

Halawa has been detained in Egypt for the past 28 months, along with 493 other prisoners.

His detention happened in the aftermath of Egyptian president Abdul Fattah el-Sisi seizing power in July 2013 amid a crackdown on protests.

Just last month Halawa’s mass trial in Cairo was postponed once more as two of his 419 co-defendants were not well enough to stand trial.

That was the ninth time he had been brought to trial only for the action to be suspended.

The next such trial is scheduled to take place on 15 December.

This week South Dublin County Council unanimously passed a motion calling on the Taoiseach to call for the release of Ibrahim.

During Sisi’s recent visit to the UK Ibrahim’s family called on David Cameron to raise his case in their discussions, though the prime minister did not confirm whether or not this had actually happened.

The full text of Ibrahim’s letter to his family is below:

I write with a ticking clock closer to my death. For the past two years and three months I have been imprisoned unjustly. I’m waiting in a queue for my turn on the death rope. My only crime is being innocent. I have waited for the Egyptian government to prove otherwise but clearly hasn’t.
There are many laws to prove my right to be released or handed back to my country but the judicial system in Egypt is very corrupt. Being in a mass trial will never grant me my freedom. I have been thrown in a place that is in no way humanitarian to live in. The very same place a lot suffer. In Egypt no-one hears their cry. This is the place where experimental torture is practiced. This the place once you’re in there is no out.
Words will never do justice to what happens in Egyptian prisons. Now that I have finished my arrest period as a defendant and have given the judicial system in Egypt the full time to prove I am guilty, I protest for my freedom by going on a hunger strike since 21 October 2015. I have now been on a hunger strike for 20 days and it will continue until I am released. I will continue regardless of my bad health conditions. Because in Egypt you must pay your life in order to be released.
I will not be protesting for better conditions but to be released. I really want to thank everyone who has supported me because it is your help that will get me released. I do not believe in the Egyptian judicial system but I believe in hope and my hope is to make it back home one day. Alive.

Ibrahim Halawa, Prison 440.

One minute you’re taking a photo of the majestic pyramids of Giza the next your in the middle of a Muslim Brotherhood march calling for Sharia law and blood. this is happening all to often these days.

Given that this is the second time he has claimed to be on hunger strike to the death you’ll have to excuse me for failing to believe a word of this. Or anything else from this family for that matter.
Look, lets call a spade a spade here, they’re obviously getting so desperate that they’re reusing a perviously used lie. We’ve also heard tall tales of torture that, when investigated by Irish embassy officials, turned out to be baseless. It’s a fact that every bogus claim made by this family has been investigated and discredited by Irish officials, yet they persist in lying.
The only truth is that he, and he alone, is responsible for being where he currently is. His family have a long and strong association with the Muslim Brotherhood that ultimately led to his current situation, it’s utter nonsense to claim he was just an innocent Irish student abroad caught up in the violence. He wasn’t, he was actively involved in it, there is video evidence to support this. His family’s previously large online presence was also dramatically taken down and erased within days of this, not an easy thing to do for innocent student girls to do. They missed one or two items though.
Every few weeks we have to go through this rubbish of hearing how he’s going on hunger strike, he’s being tortured, he’s being tried for murder etc, etc. If any of it were true he’d be like a Terminator, always coming back. Give it a rest, do his punishment. Yes I know he hasn’t been tried yet, and the Egyptian system is not like Western systems, but then if it were groups like the Muslim brotherhood couldn’t hope to operate like they did and overthrow a government, could they. Can’t have it both ways.

The case of Cork man Eanna Ó Cochláin deserves more highlighting. It has been receiving some publicity in Ireland but the story seems to be flying below most people’s radars.

You can watch him tell his own story here:
    https://youtu.be/8J62_STZXqk

In brief, Eanna is a Cork nurse who is married to a Filipino woman Jho and has a 22 year old daughter Caoimhe. He and his wife were in the Philippines two years ago settling the affairs of his wife’s late father’s will. Going through Laoag airport to leave the Philippines, he was searched three times by security staff. A tiny amount of cannabis (0.38g) was mysteriously found on the third search.

He was arrested and later sentenced to 12 years in prison. An appeal has been ongoing for nearly two years. He is out on bail there but trapped in the country (leaving him unable to attend funerals of his mother and a brother and a sister who died in the interim). He claims that he was framed. He describes demands for bribes to make all of this go away, which he (probably unwisely) refused to pay. This seems all too plausible given Filipino corruption levels.

An Independent report him quoted him as saying:

“About two days later I was told if you don’t pay up you will be found guilty. They were threatening to give me 25 years if I did not pay them around €7-10,000. I refused to pay their corruption money, because the problem is they can still lock me up even if I do pay.”

The Cork man believes that he was targeted because officials knew that both he and his family based in Cork had money. His brother on Cork radio also said that Eanna had bought a Filipino beach-front property 20 years ago for next to nothing, which is now in an exclusive location. He had also come under pressure to sell this up. A country like the Philippines is generally corrupt enough that one has to give him the benefit of the doubt. They also knew he was in the country to settle his wife’s dead father’s affairs. Money would be involved.

Other than offering some consular assistance, it seems the Irish government have done next to nothing to help so far. Meanwhile they are jumping through hoops for a Muslim Brotherhood supporter (alleged) arrested in Egypt and this case is constantly and erroneously reported in the media.

As he explains himself, at 55 years of age and with health problems, 12 years in a Filipino prison is effectively a death sentence.

You can sign a petition here on this web page set up by his family:
Bring Eanna Home – Innocent Irish man sentenced to 12 years prison in Philippines:

In April 2013, 5 months before Ibrahim Halawa did his thing in Egypt, Irish woman Aisling Brady McCarthy was arrested in Boston and later charged with the first degree murder of a 1 year old baby she had been a nanny for. We now know this was an overzealous prosecutor and an already very ill baby. Bear in mind that this Irish woman has been confirmed to have had no case to answer to, it wasn’t a question of did she do it or didn’t she, or what explanation would she present. She quite literally woke up one day to be arrested for a terrible crime she knew nothing about, a nightmare that took over two years for her to be exonerated from.
Where was all the media attention for her case in that time? She wasn’t the Irish person receiving the most attention during that period, Ibrahim Halawa was, and indeed still is. She didn’t persistently release lies about her treatment, claim to be on hunger strike – twice and bombard the media every few weeks with lie after lie. And she was innocent. We can learn some things from this, the Ibrahim Halawa needs to realise he’s doing himself no favours with his persistent lies, and innocent Irish people can be arrested and held without trial in America too.

Morsi (Muslim Brotherhood) was elected president with just over 50% of the vote on the second count…not sure is this was a democratic election or not – they don’t seem to be big on these in that part of the world but it appeared to be….

@Gavan Duffy. Democracy Muslim Brotherhood style,-
—”Those dealing with brutal violence speak for themselves. For example, a Muslim man “beat his pregnant wife to death upon learning that she had not voted for the Muslim Brotherhood candidate Muhammad Morsi.” According to police reports, “despite her pleas,” the husband “battered and bruised” her after discovering she had voted for the secularist candidate, Ahmed Shafiq. She died later in the hospital “from injuries sustained.”
–”Prior to Egypt’s presidential elections, Islamists made clear that the electoral process was an obligatory form of “holy war.” Then, any number of Islamic clerics, including influential ones, declared that it was mandatory for Muslims to cheat during elections—if so doing would help Islamist candidates win; that the elections were a form of jihad, and those who die are “martyrs” who will attain the highest levels of paradise. Top Islamic institutions and influential clerics, such as Yusuf al-Qaradawi, issued fatwas decreeing that all Muslims were “obligated” to go and vote for those candidates most likely to implement Sharia law, with threats of hellfire for those failing to do so.—”

Your arguments are void when you link a website that boasts about promoting American interests in other people countries. As much as I distrust the Muslim brotherhood and despise sharia law they were democratically elected and their removal was undemocratic; it was this fact that led him to the protests and onto stage. You can’t have it both ways, you can’t glorify our progressive western society and then support an attack on its cornerstone, i.e. democracy.

Diarmuid, what I find amusing is you accusing me of moral bankruptcy when on another article you vilify SF on one hand and then use them and the PIRA to justify your arguments on the other! Any how that’s a different matter.

Do you think that just because you are an Irish citizen that it gives you a God given right to some sort of special treatment in another country? Halawa knew before he went to Egypt what the country was like and what the situation on the ground was. He knew what happens in the prisons and Egypt’s less than satisfactory human rights record so it should have come as no great surprise to him that he is now in the world of $hit and dealing with some very nasty people and practices. If you go into a fire, expect to get burnt.

He might have gotten some sympathy from me if this whole bull$sit story about being an innocent holiday maker being caught up in the riots hadn’t been peddled about. Maybe the next time he books his “holidays” he will try not to involve himself in rioting and maybe stick to something a bit more sedate.

Diarmuid I never said anything about legitimizing torture in any way but I know that your usual MO is to make up stuff and attribute it to the person who calls your bluff so as to try to discredit them.

Torture is wrong by any regime including the UK whose torture of Irish citizens in the past has been used to justify the torture by the US and it’s allies including Egypt in the present.

If you go to a country in the middle of massive civil upheaval, take part in illegal demonstrations and rioting and then get banged up in jail then my attitude is you made your bed so now sleep in it. I wouldn’t mind but it’s not like he didn’t know what the regime and prisons are like seeing as he has Egyptian relatives on the ground so the “dumb tourist ” defence is even more stupid.

Diarmuid has no problem supporting foreigners who also come to Ireland, changing native way of life. Odd what makes you holy in this new multicult religion

-Support of foreigners making trouble in other foreigners countries = good

@Gavan Duffy. Not just by me but many qualified people globally can evidemce that BDS is not a charity but, like a lot of things Islamic, a front for demonizing Israel and thus terrorizing Jews who support Israel. In fact, all of Islam, masquerading as a religion, is a front for Islamo-Fascist Expansion and Conquest.
In short BDS is nothing but a front for Hamas’s famous promise in The Hamas Charter.
—”Israel will exist and will continue to exist until Islam will obliterate it, just as it obliterated others before it” (The Martyr, Imam Hassan al-Banna, of blessed memory). —”

Palestinian Terror-Group Links to the BDS Movement Many Palestinian groups that claim to support nonviolence often exist alongside, and not in place of, groups that support violent “resistance.” For example, in November 2008 the BDS National Committee produced a position paper titled “United Against Apartheid, Colonialism and Occupation: Dignity & Justice for the Palestinian People.”76 Among the endorsers of this paper is the London-based Popular Resistance Committees (PRC), which, according to the Israeli defense minister’s designation, is part of Hamas’ European section. Another endorser is the Swiss-based Alkarama for Human Rights. In December 2013 the U.S. Treasury categorized as “Specially Designated Global Terrorists” both the president of the Council of Alkarama, the Qatar-based Sheikh Abd al-Rahman bin ‘Umayr al-Nu’aymi,77 and the organization’s representative in Yemen, `Abd al-Wahhab Muhammad `Abd al-Rahman al-Humayqani, for their funding of various al-Qaeda groups.78 The top-listed signatory on the 2005 call is the Council of National and Islamic Forces in Palestine (CNIF). The CNIF is described as the “coordinating body for the major political parties in the Occupied Palestinian Territory.”79 It is also a member of the BDS National Committee. – See more at: http://jcpa.org/unmasking-bds/#sthash.xGkOYlAU.dpuf.

The young lad was duped – most young fellas want to impress their old man. Unfortunately in this fella’s case his old man is a religious fanatic and as an expat Brotherhood bigwig had to represented when it was going off in the home country. So the poor unfortunate tried to impress Daddy by trying to prove he was tough. The rest of us might be lucky and have family members who would stand up for us against a nutcase father. But this young 17 year old lad was doubly screwed by having equally fanatical sisters.

@Suzie – I appreciate that it involves more than a phone call but he is entitled to diplomatic/consular representation as an Irish citizen regardless of the crime.
I am fully aware that efforts have been made – simply saying that more could be done.similar to the governments of those arrested with him, some who have since been released following intervention.
If it was Patrick O’Toole from Co Wicklow then I am sure the comments and attitudes displayed on this platform would be considerably different and more sympathetic and his innocence would not be questioned.
Pretty sure I will get a huge number of red thumbs for the comment which will simply prove my point.

@Periguin – the production of a passport is not required to determine citizenship.

I hold duel nationality – in the early 90′s, I would travel to the US on a British passport for Visa reasons – I would use my Irish passport for travel in Europe and Asia for the same reasons but mainly for my own security.

Had reason to seek consular advise on one visit to the US – the Irish Embassy didn’t deny me advise just because I entered the US on a British passport – still treated me as an Irish citizen.

This right extends to every citizen who encounters difficulties abroad regardless of passport of passport where dual nationality applies.
Whilst I may be in a minority on this platform regarding my opinion, I believe in general there are many who believe that the Department of Foreign Affairs could do more to assist.

Egypt is totally corrupt. The Army Generals are paid directly by the US to keep the peace with Israel. This subvention of $1 billion+ does not go through the Egyptian Dept of Finance. The generals actually own the resort of Sharm El Sheik (have you ever tried to drive a rental car from there to Cairo?) as well as many other industries in the country. It is impossible for a bright young person to pass exams without greasing the palm of officials. It is heartbreaking. It was so sad to see the enthusiasm of the Tahrir Square Arab Spring being replaced by another military dictator – Sisi. I really pity this Irish citizen being in an Egyptian hellhole prison. The Dept of Foreign Affairs (and our MEP’s) should redouble its efforts to get Ibrahim out.

For anyone interested there is a wonderful song in Irish and Arabic about the war in Iraq on Youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bp69eVX0k0Q
