THIS HOTEL TUCKED away on the banks of Lake Eske in Donegal has been named as the best reviewed hotel in Ireland for the second time this year.

Harvey’s Point – no stranger to awards over the years – has been named by Trivago as winners of the website’s Top Hotel Awards in Ireland.

The hotels were ranked using the website’s own rating system, which they say combines over 190 million online ratings from more than 30 different websites across the world.

Harvey’s Point has been in business since 1989, and is run by Deirdre McGlone and husband Marc Gysling.

McGlone told TheJournal.ie that she is “over the moon” with the latest award.

“It’s great motivation for staff and it’s great for business,” she said.

She said they started small with the hotel more than 16 years ago, and were faced with the challenges of building up a business from scratch in very rural and remote location.

“We converted that challenge into an opportunity,” she says.

The hotel receives plenty of business from locals, but also targets a high-end market for those looking for “a little bit of exclusivity”.

We like to offer world-class, genuine Irish hospitality, but without it becoming too stuffy.

McGlone said the outlook for the Irish hotel sector is bright, but she’s making sure they don’t “get carried away”. Customers are the same too – “They’re spending wisely.”

She believes there are more opportunities coming down the line in terms of a boost in overseas travel, and even from within Ireland thanks to the Wild Atlantic Way.

Here’s the top twenty hotels in Ireland, according to Trivago:

Stayed in Harvey’s Point for a midweek break a few years ago. The place is brilliant, the staff and service are unbelievable. Our son was poorly at the time and they could not have been nicer.

Living up in Donegal I regularly visit there for Sunday lunch and can honestly say nowhere else even comes close for quality or service. Well done to all the staff a Harvey’s Point.

Great little country. High unemployment in Donegal and people have no problem in squandering€30 for a lunch. I always thought that Donegal was a disadvantaged county!!

Of course the best hotels in Ireland are NOT on this list. You need to book directly with the hotel to reserve such as The Cliff House Hotel, Monart and Ashford Castle.
