Man fined €500 for causing unnecessary suffering to 11 horses - four had to be put down

Gardaí and an ISPCA Inspector discovered the horses in December 2013.

A DONEGAL MAN who pleaded guilty to causing unnecessary suffering to eleven horses was fined €500.

The case came about after gardaí and ISPCA Inspector Kevin McGinley discovered 11 horses during a visit of lands in December 2013.

McGinley said, “There was no grass available and I could not see any supplementary food. Shelter was very minimal given the fact it was the end of December and the only water available was from a drain.

Some of the other horses were in very poor body condition with their back bones and ribs clearly protruding. I observed a brown horse trying to eat bushes in search of food.

Inspector McGinley said he contacted the Department of Agriculture vet for assistance and four horses were put down to prevent further suffering.

When the equines were scanned for microchips, only one was found to be chipped and none were registered to the man in question.

McGinley added, “This was a horrific form of cruelty and it was unfortunate that these defenceless animals had to ensure such suffering”.

If you suspect an animal is being cruelly treated, neglected or abused, please contact the ISPCA National Animal Cruelty Helpline in confidence on 1890 515 515 or report online on at ISPCA.ie.

    Watch as we slightly reword Government press releases on various subjects where the public are told to get back in our boxes and do what we’re told and then turn the comment section off, because we don’t don’t want any dissenting voices.

    In the past few weeks statements made by government Minister’s, the comment section has been closed. The taking down of comments that contain no personal or unacceptable comment but would have been critical of government have been removed. Bit hypocritical of the Journal.

    @establishment loyalist fascist lil joey:

    I didn’t ignore it no offence I forgot about it…also its not a priority to reply to every reply you make to me which is alot…

    But I think it was about the 70 year old assaulted in clare? I don’t know the circumstances of the assault but I’m guessing your employing it was done by anti mass immigration protestors….do you have proof of this? But let’s say it’s true I have no idea….I abhor violence against anyone unless its done for defensive reasons….if this 70 year old man was attacked by one of the protestors….then I would condemned such an attack as that infringes on the right of the 70 year old not to be assaulted for no reason…

    So I would condemn such an attack
