27-year-old man dies after violent assault in Navan

The man has been named as Christopher Nevin.

Updated 12.35pm

A MAN HAS died in hospital after a vicious assault in Navan yesterday.

The incident took place in Winetown, Navan, at around 2.15pm. The man, named as Christopher Nevin, is understood to have been stabbed with a large blade, sustaining a number of serious wounds. It is believed he was also badly beaten in the attack.

The 27-year-old man was in cardiac arrest when paramedics arrived at the scene and had to be resuscitated. He was rushed to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda and was taken straight to theatre for emergency surgery.

In a statement this afternoon gardaí confirmed Nevin died in hospital. A post mortem is now due to take place.

Gardaí say a scene has been preserved at Tailteann Road and are appealing for witnesses. It is believed the assault may have been part of an ongoing feud.

A number of males were involved in the incident. After the assault they got into a silver car and drove off in the direction of the town centre.

“Deep shock”

Speaking earlier today to TheJournal.ie, deputy mayor for Navan, councillor Wayne Forde, said he was “horrified by the incident”. He said the people of Navan were “in deep shock”.

Forde also said the assault highlighted the need for further garda resources in the area.

“Anti-social behaviour in Navan and in county Meath is just gone out of control at the moment”.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Navan Garda Station on 046 907 9930 or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111.

It’s like a free for all at the moment in Ireland. Things are starting to escalate quickly but nobody seems to be addressing the problem.

The fuc.ing cutbacks on garda resources, and closing down garda stations all over the Country, by the shower of bright sparks we have in government, just the tip of the iceberg.

Navan is a small place. There will be many who will know the perpetrators of this heinous crime – and they will be apprehended very soon.

Nobody wishes a guy to be stabbed to death, but if there was no feud why would a gang attack the victim, was he just jumped because he was in the wrong place at the wrong time or was what seems obvious previous between the victim and his attackers?..

Sounds like them that have to honour names, so sad for the poor family.
Perhaps at the funeral service the priest could tell them about the name above all names, anyway sad needles.
