Man arrested over fire that killed five-year-old girl

A man in his 30s has been arrested in Sligo in connection with the house fire in Boyle, Co Roscommon on Monday.

A MAN HAS been arrested in connection with the house fire that killed a five-year-old girl in Boyle, Co Roscommon.

The man in his 30s was taken into custody this afternoon in the Sligo area, and is currently being questioned by officers at Boyle garda station.

The victim, who has been named as Mari Connolly, was killed early on Monday morning by a blaze at the house she was sleeping in. A man in his late 20s and two other children managed to escape from the fire, which was discovered between 2.30am and 3am.

Gardaí announced yesterday that they were treating the fire as suspicious, and have asked anyone with information to contact them.

    how anyone could set fire to a house, never mind one with little children in it, is beyond me…..
    If this guy did set fire to the house, the very least he should be charged with is murder

    More than likely manslaughter unless it can be proven that he knew people were in the house and that his intent was to kill them.

    i suspect that you might be right Cormac but TBH I don’t care whether he knew or not that the children were in the house…… A little girl is now dead because of his depravity and that to me is plain & simple murder.

    Oh I agree. Iv stated on this site before that there should be two levels of murder and the same for manslaughter(similar to the US)

    Anyone who does that is clearly unstable so I’m pretty sure whoever it was didnt care whether it’s occupied or not!! Absolutely disgusting!!!!
