Here's seven things you didn't know about Coke's hundred-year-old bottle

If you’re drinking gallons of the stuff this festive season, you might as well know some of its history…

coke1 Coca Cola Coca Cola

THE “SO DISTINCTIVE it could be recognized in the dark or lying on the groundCoca-Cola bottle is 100-years-old.

To celebrate one of the world’s most valuable brands and its equally recognizable packaging, here’s seven things you might not know about a bottling institution.

1. In 1915, the Root Glass Company in Terre Haute, Indiana, patented the now-famous contoured Coca-Cola glass bottle.

2. The curves of the bottle are referred to as a ”hobbleskirt.”

3. Coca-Cola developed the first six-pack in 1923 in order to encourage consumers to drink more of the soft drink and to take it home with them.

4. All Coca-Cola bottles produced between late 1923 and 1937 are referred to as ”Christmas Bottles,” due to a renewed bottle patent issued on Christmas Day, 1923.

5. In 1950, Coca-Cola’s now-famous bottle was the first commercial product to appear on the cover of Time magazine.

Here’s the 15 May, 1950 cover:

6. In 1955 Coca-Cola debuted its King Size (10 and 12-ounce) and Family Size (26-ounce) bottles.

7. Coca-Cola began testing a process to put the drink into cans before World War II, but due to the war effort all development on cans was postponed.

All I can say it tastes Shi@e out of plastic bottles and cans. In Asia they still have glass bottles, nothing better than a cold one for the thirst.

You can still buy it from the glass bottle here (nearly every pub seems to have them and charge way over for them) too but not worth it!

The trick Liam, is to neutralise the Coke with a drop of Whisky, Vodka or Bacardi. The alcohol acts like the anti-coagulant Aspirin while the Coke acts as a transporter. Anything you cant finish, pour it over yourself and let it absorb into the skin to help with any Arthritis. Continued health to you.

No they shouldn’t… It’s obvious to even the most dimwited individuals that it’s full of sugar.

The fact you need a warning label to tell you drinking gallons of Coke is bad for you is natural selection in action.

You really shouldn’t be passing genes on to future generations

Fred Astare, the only trick I have for the empty bottle is to urinate in it if theres no facilities about. Might be a tad difficult for the females though.

Think you need to accept your own personal responsibility for your heart attack!

Aswell as drinking lots of Coke no doubt you also ate a lot of easy high fat content food (and I’m not talking about mc Donald’s or the sort necessarily) which is staple to the Irish diet and perhaps you where not as fit and active as perhaps you should be?

    Good luck with your recovery!

Many fit and active people on a rabbit food diet die of heart attacks too, google Jim Fixx, or just google fitness fanatic drops dead and you might find that sometimes putting your body under pressure can often be fatal.

I used to make the bottles when I worked in Irish Glass, they were a gift to make and you could relax when they were on your line. When the last of the IGB bottles were gone the new ones had a lower capacity and a whole lot less glass in the bottle. I never acquired a taste for what they put in it.

One of the ingredients for coke while being transported by road is classed as a dangerous good,A company I worked for transported some of the raw ingredients for Pepsi. The smell of the stuff if a box leaked was rank.

An ingredient does not have to be explosive to be classed as a dangerous goods,Back in the 90s I was doing a dangerous goods specialist course for transporting dangerous substances by air. The lad delivering the course told myself and the other students about an incident involving one of the major Cola companies in the USA. Basically a number of boxes leaked on to the main deck of the freighter aircraft which corroded the deck and the aircraft was a write off. The Cola company at first did not want to pay out but did in the end due to the negative press they would receive with court cases etc.
