Beating, pinching, deliberate poisoning - 19,000 reports of child abuse made in Ireland every year

The largest number of referrals relate to concerns about emotional abuse.

IN IRELAND OVER the last three years, there was an average of 19,000 child protection referrals due to abuse concerns.

In the first quarter of 2015 alone, the number had reached 4,770.

  • The largest number of referrals – some 1,743 – were because of concern about emotional abuse;
  • A further 1,260 related to neglect;
  • Concern about physical abuse resulted in 1,038 reports;
  • And 729 referrals related to sexual abuse claims or worries.

Tusla, Ireland’s child and family agency, says incidents of physical abuse against children can involve:

  • severe physical punishment;
  • beating, slapping, hitting or kicking;
  • pushing, shaking or throwing;
  • pinching, biting, choking or hair-pulling;
  • terrorising with threats;
  • observing violence;
  • use of excessive force in handling;
  • deliberate poisoning;
  • suffocation;
  • fabricated/induced illness
  • allowing or creating a substantial risk of significant harm to a child.

Children in State care

In response to a parliamentary question from TD Bernard Durkan, Minister for Children James Reilly explained that not all referrals will result in a need for a social work service or in a child being taken into care.

He said it was difficult to say whether a satisfactory resolution, from a child’s point of view, has been achieved in all instances, but stressed children are consulted, in as far as possible, in relation to decisions that affect them.

Latest figures show some 6,373 children are in State care. The majority of these children are in foster care, with 337 living in residential care. The number of children coming into care for the first time has been falling in the past few years.

However the minister said Tusla “deals immediately with emergency cases, including for instance, if a child has been abandoned or is in immediate physical danger or at immediate risk of sexual abuse”.

“Social work duty teams keep high priority cases under review by regularly checking to ascertain risk to the child, and where necessary will re-prioritise the case,” he said.

    Very sad. With the amount of loving couples trying desperately to have children out there. These numbers if true are shocking. Some people simply don’t deserve kids. Some may say even neuter them.

    Disgusting.
    It’s a long way from some of the ancient cultures,
    where women would nurture their offspring to the point where they used to eat special foods throughout their
    child-bearing years so as to make sure their babies would be strong and well developed.

    Now that’s reduced to throwing the leg over after a night down the boozer, or taking a trip to the nearest fertility clinic and expecting them to work miracles with a few test tubes and a couple of malnourished obese flaccid infirm beings.

    It’s time to take a firm look at what’s deemed “safe for consumption” in this country/world, both physically and psychologically.

    According to an ESRI report two years ago, black children were 20 times more likely to be taken into social care than any other group.
    Once they publish a national and ethnic breakdown of these figures, the more detail and insight we’re likely to see.
    The same can be said for human slavery that’s entered Ireland – not a single case involving Irish people.
    We’re importing all sorts of trouble and then paying huge sums of time and money to employ agencies and people to sort out the mess.
    The truth is stifled and all that can be said are the benefits of mass immigration, which are seldom seen.

    VoV…completely true but must NEVER be spoken of..Dr carol Coulter released a report recently from the family law courts and her figures for African and traveller kids subject to care orders of varying kinds are WAY out of proportion for their %’s of the population.I think however the prevailing official position is that this is due largely to Ireland’s failure to fully embrace and accept their cultures.

    Agreed Smiley , and the bandying about of “emotional abuse” leads to a lucrative business for many many professionals, not least the psychiatric industry and their cohorts in crime the pharmaceutical firms who are without doubt the deadliest drug pushers in Ireland.

    In most cases children shouldn’t be in State “care” ,but there’s bags of money and many government jobs dependent on the word of childless SJW’s who know above most “what’s in the best interest of the child” , the modern day ‘cruelty man’.

    Why do people have children if they don’t want them? I think that a person who deliberately harms a child in anyway must really hate themselves as a human being. Children are meant to be loved and treasured. They are the future after all.

    >Why do people have children if they don’t want them?

    One answer is that, aside from adoption, they have no other option if they fall pregnant.

    I (and I assume most people) always assume that these cases are really rare, but with statistics like that, we all need to be really vigilant for signs of abuse in our children’s friends, neighouring children etc.
    The suffering these people cause is outrageous, I have nothing but contempt for anyone who hurts a child.

    I’ve never ever slapped my kids. Something which I’m very proud of.
    (Their adults now)

    However.
    I have a brother , he has 3 kids with his girlfriend and between the two of them they are the nastiest foul mouthed parents I have ever came across and I have told them this to their faces . The level of physical and mental and foul mouthed abuse they throw at the kids is outrageous . Kids should be taken away from them and I feel for the kids tbh. I have removed myself from their environment because in the end their both low life trouble makers and sc.mbags tbh. Kids have no hope with parental skills these two dopes have.

    i honestly think alot of people are not suited to have children. in today’s society both parents work. the kids are raised by creches in the most important times of their lives when they are developing. The main thing I have noticed is people’s lack of patience but children nowadays are so much more aware of what is happening because of internet and tv. Half the stuff is not appropriate and is corrupting their minds. The innocence is gone far sooner these days

    What would the real figure be if people were not afraid to report these abusers? Treble that number. Most people know and the professionals dealing don’t bother anymore as there is too much hassle with legal issues — they simply try their best to treat the victim and the abuser never gets jail. It’s the Irish way 100% tolerant ok child abuse. The Rape Crises Centre don’t even bother anymore— they gave up a long tie ago when they accepted status quo in law enforcement and government s lack of interest.
