TV3 launches new on-demand player for iPhone and iPad

The broadcaster’s new 3player will allow viewers to watch shows including X Factor on mobile devices.

TV3 HAS BECOME the first Irish national broadcaster to allow viewers watch its shows on the iPhone and iPad, as well as online.

The independent station today launched 3player, a video-on-demand website. The site allows users to watch shows including Tonight with Vincent Browne, X Factor, Xposé and The Apprentice on smartphones and tablet devices.

Managers at the station said the new platform also offers a bigger screen and higher video quality, as well as linkups with social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter. Previously it was possible to watch some TV3 shows online via a computer, but not on smartphones or tablets.

In a statement, the broadcaster said video on demand is a rapidly growing market and has doubled in size over the last year in the UK. It added that the Irish market is projected to be worth more than €10million by 2015. Ads will be played before viewers can access some programmes.

Stephen Grant, director of TV3′s online operations, said: “Our investment in this new, richer environment for catching up with our great content reiterates TV3 commitment to bringing our viewers the best possible entertainment experience, whether they prefer to watch on TV or online on PCs or mobile devices.”

RTÉ launched its own online player in 2009, but it does not currently function on iPhone or iPad.

arguable, as it could be deemed a receiving device but for now at least your probably safe, though i suspect that as the technology changes accelerate that the TV licence will evolve into a media viewing / receiving license with the same effect on your wallet.

There was a 3rd party app written called Telly Eireann but RTE blocked access for it due to "copyright issues".
Technically there is zero reason why they’re deliberately stopping access as the functionality was there a year or two ago. It’s pure laziness on RTE’s part.
Then again there is nothing on RTE to watch anyway…

Jack, iswifter isn’t a bad idea in principle but it uses an usa proxy. This will only give you access to the international version of rte player, ok if it’s the 6.1 news or the late late, but if you’re into your uk soaps etc you have no chance….. However if you wanted to access u.s. Network streaming of live shows then a browser that uses a u.s. Proxy should (theoretically … Ahem!!!) work like a treat. But then seeing that I obviously haven’t tried this wouldn’t know for sure.

Paul, Flash is an industry standard for streaming video content. You anger should not be aimed at RTE for usiung proven and cost effective systems. You should question Apple for using their considerable market advantage to force developers to use a system which they stand to make considerable profit from (HTML5) – while also forcing up the cost of accessing such content for the average consumer.

To dispell the myth Apple have sowed… Flash is not the spawn of Satan, it will not cause your battery to explode killing all around you… I’ve been using it for over two years on my mobile without issue. In fact it keeps getting better, particularly with the recent release of version 11, it seems super fast right now.

The standard is open, the codecs are not. TV3 must pay to use the codecs, the consumer must also pay to have those codecs – which are usually bundled on the device, which pushes the cost to the consumer up…

Apple don’t pay Adobe. Adobe make money by selling market competetive flash development software. You don’t pay to publish flash content. However, if you want to publish HTML5 content you need to pay royalties for the Codecs.

Just to clarify, Apple are a major stake holder for HTML5 codecs & do earn money from the content published, whether its for viewing on a PC, android, windows wed os or apple or any other product… Apple are abusing their power to try to kill Flash.

RTE are actually breaking the law when they don’t follow up people with smartphones and demand television licenses from them
In actuality, and in law ,a smart phone is a “Television Reception Apparatus”.

Surprised that nobody (yet) who has been dragged into court for not paying their RTE TV license has not challenged RTE on this.
