EARLIER THIS WEEK the RTÉ Investigates programme found a number of councillors offering their assistance in return for money, or in one case, a possible loan in the future.

The programme drew much controversy but it is yet unclear whether any of those involved will face repercussions.

Writing in the Irish Times today, Fintan O’Toole has argued that the Irish political system does punish those caught up in such scandals, and that such notoriety may even be an electoral asset.
