There were almost 30,000 burglaries in Ireland in the first nine months of 2015

It’s not all bad news however, murder offences have fallen by almost a third.

THE RATE OF burglary in Ireland increased by almost 2,000 offences in the first nine months of 2015.

The latest crime figures released by the Central Statistics Office (CSO) deliver mixed messages as to the rates of crime in Ireland.

28,407 burglaries and related offences were committed in the first nine months of this year, a 6% increase on the 26,747 recorded over the same period in 2014. 12,688 of those crimes were committed in the Dublin area.

The increased rate of such home invasions come in a year that has seen the spotlight turned on rural crime and the vulnerability of those living in isolated communities to gangs travelling from Ireland’s urban centres.

The growth in such burglary and related offences is “truly alarming” according to Eoin Dunne, managing director with PhoneWatch.

“We are urging all householders to remain vigilant, especially in the run up to Christmas, which is peak season for opportunist burglars,” said Dunne.

Other Offences

Unfortunately burglary is not the only category of crime to see a significant increase since 2014.

Sexual offences, including incidences of rape and sexual assault, increased by 14.1% to 2,262 for the first nine months of this year, an increase of 279.

Fraud and deception are also on the rise with 5,490 such offences recorded since the start of the year, an increase of 6.8%.

It’s not all bad news however.

Murder offences in Ireland have decreased by almost half so far in 2015. 54 homicides have been recorded so far this year, as opposed to 84 for the same period last year.

Robbery / Extortion decreased by 9.1% to 2,554 offences, while weapons and explosives-related crimes are down 7.3%.

Similarly drugs-related offences are on the slide with just 15,116 such crimes recorded this year, down from 15,766.

As might be expected the number of offences committed overall in Dublin is more than twice the figure for any other region in the country.

99,149 crimes have been recorded in the capital so far this year, a 3.9% increase on the 95,437 seen at the same time last year.

All crime statistics are taken from official Garda records as reported by the CSO.

How many are by repeat offenders? these vermin out on bail or on suspended sentences are laughing and the State is letting the law abiding citizens down. It will sadly take one of the politicians to get hit before something is done about, what is after all the biggest crime wave in the history of the Irish State.

How many go unreported in the first place, and are people more or less likely to report crimes now than in previous years? These stats in themselves are of only limited use and whereas necessary and in some ways useful to have, are not scientific or even in the ball park.

Most of those stations were only part time so how its relevant Im not sure. Guards would still have to come from local town.

There a guard stationed in a large local town near me who lives in the local village in a house right beside one of the closed stations. He drives the squad car home every evening sometimes even the paddywagon van. There’s not been an ounce of bother in the three years he’s been there. You’d be amazed at what even the perception of a Garda presence can do.

What we need is more Gardai out and about, more high visibility policing combined with better intelligence and technology. This is what the money needs to be spent on, not Garda stations, many of which were only occupied on a part time basis.

I was burgled 3 times – I reported it the 1st time and the Gardai said I shouldn’t press charges as it would be better for me to have nothing to do with those involved. I handed the Garda a picture of the guy and he told me he had burgled 26 or 28 other places while he was out for Xmas. He rented a van and went on a burglary spree in 2weeks.
The figure can be trebled as people dot bother anymore.

An alarm is not enough to deter a robber, some extra locks on the door and windows will help and you can get these cheap on eBay. If a robber tries to break into a house they want to be in and out asap so making it that bit harder to break in will frustrate them and they could possibly move on.

Policing water meter installations are the priority for the Gardai courtesy of FG so no wonder these crimes are committed in such numbers – the chances of getting caught are as remote as the local Garda station. Some recovery we are experiencing. Courts are far too lenient with so called minor crimes – they are devastating for the victims & this useless government obviously could not care less. Time for them to go & the s#um involved in these crimes if caught to be harshly penalised. Another failure thanks to Edna & Joan.

Facts are your government has & continues to fail the citizens of Ireland. Check out the headline in tonight’s RTE news – homelessness is through the roof & saps like yourself still act as online cheerleaders for Enda & co. You have no shame Reg & given the volume of posts on the Journal – few friends. No wonder.

Without a functioning judiciary to give appropriate sentences and protect law abiding citizens you begin to see an undermining of civil society. An odd situation to be in that the Judges are actually by their actions undermining the very society they are meant to be protecting.
