Heading for the hills today? Here are 18 tips to stay safe on Ireland's mountains

It’s a busy time of year for the country’s mountain rescue teams. Here’s how to ensure you won’t need their services today.

SOME PEOPLE HIT the sales, others dress up in semi-pagan garb and march through the local byways banging on instruments.

For many others, though, St Stephen’s Day means a walk in the mountains.

The country’s nature trails are thronged in the days after Christmas – as families bid to escape their homes before the inevitable cabin fever sets in.

For most – it’s a stress-free day in the country. But it’s also a busy time of the year for the Coast Guard and mountain rescue crews, who are called upon to help people in difficulty on the hills.

In many cases, the hikers are inexperienced – and sometimes find themselves lost in the wilderness amid fading light and deteriorating weather conditions.

With that in mind, we asked the Dublin Wicklow Mountain Rescue Team to put together a checklist of everything you need to know before setting out on your post-Christmas trek.

  • Wrap up well: the higher you go, the colder and windier it gets, but remember that you’ll warm up with exercise. Lots of thin layers are better than one thick layer, as you can add or remove them easily to balance your temperature.
  • Bring a waterproof jacket and trousers even if the forecast is dry, the weather can change quickly in the hills. It’s better to have them and not use them, than get caught out by a sudden shower.
  • Wear boots or strong shoes and two pairs of socks. Ideally, use one thin pair and one thick to help prevent blisters. Runners are not great for hiking, as your feet will get wet and cold much easier. Spare socks are also a good idea. Dry feet are happy feet; happy hikers have happy feet.
  • A hat and gloves are essential. Consider bringing spares, as wet gloves are almost as bad as no gloves.
  • Carry some spare warm layers in case you get unexpectedly delayed. A survival bag – a large, orange plastic bag which can be purchased in most good outdoor shops – is a very useful addition to your kit. It’s a good idea to carry some spare food too – chocolate, nuts, dried fruit, or jellies are good choices.

Lugnaquilla Mountain (The Lug), Leinsters highest Lugnaquilla Mountain in Wicklow - Leinster's highest point at 924 metres.

  •  Don’t get cold: hypothermia is dangerous, but avoidable. Put on an extra layer when you stop for a break, and try to stay out of the wind. If you, or one of your party, is cold the best remedy is to eat something sugary and get moving. Warm drinks are helpful, but to stay warm you must keep moving.
  • Get an accurate weather forecast and try to anticipate how it will affect your plans. Don’t be afraid to change your plans if the weather changes.
  • Respect the environment: bring home your rubbish, never disturb farm or wild animals, respect people’s property, and leave gates as you found them. Leave No Trace Ireland have lots of information to help keep you right.
  • Get a compass and an appropriate map for the area you’re walking in. Ordnance Survey Ireland (OSI) Discovery Series are the national standard, but there are other good providers, for example EastWest Mapping for Dublin and Wicklow.
  • Learn how to use your map and compass; mobile phones with digital mapping and GPS are great, but phones don’t work if they get wet and GPS drains your battery; potentially leaving you without your phone when you need it.

  • Plan your route, and identify some escape routes should things turn bad. Always tell someone where you are going, including your escape routes, and when to expect you home. Don’t forget to tell them when you’ve safely returned.
  • Bring your mobile phone and make sure it’s charged. Consider using a waterproof case, or even a ziplock bag. Phones don’t like the rain.
  • At this time of year it gets dark early. Bring a flashlight, preferably a head torch, and spare batteries. If you’ll be walking on a road, a hi-viz vest or armband are essential in helping motorists see you.
  • A four-hour hike can burn more than 1,500 calories. Have a substantial breakfast and bring lunch. Don’t forget the water, even in an Irish winter you can become dehydrated.
  • A basic first aid kit is essential. They are available from outdoor shops, and are usually small and light. If you take prescription medication, an asthma inhaler for example, take it with you.
  • No matter what the manufacturer says, your rucksack is not waterproof. Keeping spare warm layers in waterproof – or just plastic – bags will mean they’ll be useful if you need them.
  • If you need assistance, call 999 or 112 and ask for mountain rescue. Emergency calls (999/112) use any network available to your phone, not just the one you’re on, so you should be able to make an emergency call if your phone has no coverage. If you find that you’re still unable to make an emergency call, consider sending a member of your group to higher ground to pick up a better signal. You should be careful not to put anyone at risk by asking them to climb to higher ground.
  • Be careful around river crossings, and preferably cross a river where there is an adequate bridge. If your route crosses a river, it’s a good idea to plan escape routes in case the river has become impassable. This can be a particular problem if you cross a river on your way out and on your return. Rivers can swell in size over a couple of hours, leaving you stranded on the wrong side.

John Kavanagh of Dublin Wicklow Mountain Rescue Team (who put the above list together) is asking people to get involved in their Walk the Line dusk-into-dark fundraising hike. It happens on 12 March and you can find details here.

Abstaining from vaccinations puts other people at risk. Vulnerable people and young children. Reasons not to do it are generally based on false research, rumour and emotion rather than peer reviewed independent research. Do your homework and vaccinate! If you choose not to vaccinate to “save” your children then lock them up in isolation to save mine

@Pheilum Shannon: This is inaccurate. If people continue to refuse to vaccinate their children what will happen is the virus will mutate and render the vaccine useless. The aim of vaccinations is to completely kill off the virus. TB is almost unheard of in Ireland and this is because before this nonsense every child got their bcg. When was the last time you heard of a child getting a bad case of polio? But mark my words, you will if this madness continues for much longer..

Where will it stop forced to take vaccination, what if your forced what school you have to put your child in to, and the lessons he or she takes are dictated to them their choice of job will be chosen for them, who they can marry, how many children can they have etc. DO YOU ACTUALLY SEE WHERE THIS TYPE OF THINKING WILL LEAD TO IF WE AS A SOCIETY ARE NOT CAREFUL.

@Paul Bennison: Actually this child has two parents. The agreement made between the parents was that the child be vaccinated. The father clearly wants the child vaccinated. So why does the mother get to decide alone not to vaccinate ? Especially when she previously agreed to vaccinate the child. Is the fathers choices for his child not Important ? No is the answer. One parent doesn’t get to change an agreement after signing a legally binding consent to vaccinate. What about this fathers choice to vaccinate his child ?

@Paul Bennison: Exactly! “Forced & coerced” to be vaccinated; undergo psych evaluations, be subjected to brainwashing to believe you’re something that you’re not; too be coerced into taking cocktails of narcotics, antipsychotics, etc.; worse to be forced to take something that you do not want to put into yours or your child’s body; punished for resisting or refusing to conform comply and or obey. Horrific and so so very wrong!! If the mother does not want to put foreign agents into her child’s body and othe parents disagree with that mother’s decision, jail time or prison is NOT the answer! Instead, parents who object to vaccinations (or the frequency of for a better lack of words) for their children should be given other alternatives that would be fair to other ‘concerned’ parents who fear the worst for their vaccinated children. Their concerns should be heard, understood, and equally addressed as any parent who chooses to vaccinate their own children, NOT thrown in jail for violating a court order that would only exacerbate the situation further to the point of being stripped of their innate parental rights and ultimately forced and coerced to drug their child.

@: While most vaccinations don’t guarantee protection they do offer enough varying levels of protection to have wiped out such things as smallpox, rabies. Diseases like measles can be wiped out however in large urban areas where people chose not to have their children vaccinated there have been large outbreakes with fatalities.
Imagine someone saying your children are going to travel in a car every day, here’s a safety device, it’s not 100% guaranteed but it’s 80% – 90% guaranteed. Would you take it, would you use it? Or would you wait for for the 100% guaranteed device?
Vaccinations work. They’ve been around since Jenner … ok, for a long time. They’ve already wiped out some of the deadliest diseases we’ve known, and if we allow them, can wipe out more. And here’s the thing, we don’t even have to do anything. We don’t have to do any major effort, no running, no sweating, just a vaccination that ensures we’re covered. Kind of difficult to explain why it isn’t done.

    Anyone ever heard of thalidomide..
Seems to me that a parent has every right to refuse vaccination given the possibility that there may be unintended consequences which no one can predict. If the state ..ie other people.. want to take full responsibility for my children then by all means take it and provide 100 percent of all they require..you can’t pick and choose either a parent is a parent with all the rights and responsibilities of one or ..they are simply childminders on behalf of the state…think they should make their mind up.

@Observer: well after the numpties voted in the Children’s referendum, we have been reduced to caretakers. The government knows best and will do a wonderful job protecting and providing for our children.

@Carina Clarke: absolutely! And this is what is called “socialism” and social control! No two bodies are alike and no two bodies react to the same foreign agents in their body as another. Everybody responds differently to substances and it is simply ignorant to believe or argue anything otherwise. For parents who disagree with this mother’s perspective they can always educate themselves on science and why some vaccines have left many parents concerned as well adults who have lost their own spouses due to vaccines all gone wrong.

@TruthSeeker: it’s really sad that your so devoted to risking your children’s long term health and even life, especially when your parents probably did right by you. Before anyone bites my head banging on about poison and autism, I don’t want to hear your Facebook based research. Anti-vaxers are danger to those they claim to love and a danger to society as a whole.

@Johnnathan Biskalero: Going just on the evidence of the hysterical posts you put up regularly. I must say, it really does seem that you may be someone whose brain is suffering the effects of lots of the mind altering poisons you have consumed voluntarily. Of course, I could be wrong. I await a well thought out balanced post that reflects your broad range of knowledge and wisdom.
