A monument to Irish men who died fighting for the British has been vandalised

A paint bomb was thrown at a monument to the Royal Munster Fusiliers in Tralee.

A MONUMENT TO a former Irish regiment of the British Army has been vandalised in Tralee, Co Kerry.

The piece was erected earlier this year in memory of those that fought for the Royal Munster Fusiliers in the First World War and was the subject of some controversy at the time.

There had been a dispute over whether the monument would be inclusive of all people who died during the conflict or only those from the regiment.

The inscription of the memorial reads: Cuimhnimis, Let Us Remember, The Royal Munster Fusiliers 1914-1918.

It cost €3,500 and is situated in Christ The King Park.

Just over 3,000 men who served with the unit were killed in battle during the First World War.

A message on a community Facebook page dedicated to the memory of the group said earlier:

What a shame to see that almost 100 years on, some people still carry hatred in their hearts.

    Lovely woman who loved Ireland. She pushed and got visa restrictions for Irish people lifted. And she appears in the film Micheal Collins. RIP Jean.

    @James Walsh: so if someone takes pride in their Irish Heritage, they can drive a car drunk into the sea, leave a woman in car, take a boat to another town, hide for a night and then call for help? Good to know

    No… But bringing up her brother’s bad choice over 50 years ago during the announcement of her death takes a special kind of thinking…

    You could talk about all the wonderful things her family did

    @Sylvia O’Regan:
    Actually Jean was not a politician and never ran in a race in her life.

    She was diplomat and done a great service for Ireland and for that we can be forever thankful. This help to Ireland from the Kennedy’s was in a long line of help her family gave to Ireland .
