Cars should have black boxes like aircraft. These could be examined after serious accidents to get a better idea what caused the event. Peoples lives are too precious and the technology exists. The data could also help flag consistently dangerous driving before the inevitable accident. Not suggesting that this is relevant to this immediate case. Hope they are ok.

    Terrible. Always is.

Q: Why not reveal the make and model of car? Why should only insurance companies know which types of cars are involved in such accidents?

Knowing the truth might help car-buyers decide to avoid certain makes/models and thus reduce injury/fatality.

I’ve never seen it reported. In fact, it seems to be actively avoided.

Great point @tim_neliigan I also believe there should be a traffic accident investigation unit set up that would publish causes of accidents etc something along the same lines as the air accident investigation unit. I believe that this would make people more aware of the causes of accidents and hence help people avoid driving practices.

Make and model of car isn’t at all relevant here. Far, far more important is the attitude we have to drivers who drink and drive. They are 5cum of the earth

I think a report for every car accident should be published, cause, cars involved, casualties etc, but I do not believe the make of car determines the outcome of the accident, I drove my 98 fiat punto (washing machine) into the side of a yellow earth mover and survived, without too many serious injuries.

I agree fully with Tim, for no other reason than to decide on possible safety issues of certain cars. A friend of mine had a Renault with a sloped rear window which like looking out through a letter box,he asked me park it once for him and it was awful, a few years later I was considering buying a Rover which had a sloped rear window which I noticed as soon as in sat in it, the salesman was bemused that I got out within 5 minutes refusing to consider the car. Blind spots on certain cars may be contributing to accidents in certain conditions and there might be other factors we don’t know about.

Jho – what an utter garbage post. Renault in particular is always towards the top scoring cars on NCAP tests. I don’t what your field of expertise is, but it’s not cars.

…just go to the RSA website and look it up- it’s there already. The biggest cause of accidents on Irish roads is “going to wrong side of road”. Of courses (still) not wearing seat belts is now on the INCREASE would you believe. ..

@Tim: make/model irrelevant. Cats don’t cause accidents; people do.
