Couple (30s) hospitalised after late-night attack by gang of youths

Passers-by intervened and the attackers ran off. Gardaí are appealing for information.

GARDAÍ IN LIMERICK are appealing for information after a couple in their 30s were attacked outside a nightclub.

It happened last weekend. The man and woman had to be hospitalised for treatment to their injuries in the wake of the attack and robbery, which happened on Michael Street between 2.30am and 2.50am on Sunday 20 December.

“They had just left a local nightclub when they were attacked in the street by a number of youths,” Sergeant Justin McCarthy of Henry Street Station told Limerick’s Live 95fm.

A phone was stolen from one of the victims during the robbery and both victims required attention at the regional hospital for minor injuries.

Passers-by intervened and the attackers fled the scene before any serious injury was caused, McCarthy said.

Any witnesses are being asked to contact the station on 061 212 400.

The statistics are there for all to see, these large country towns are far more dangerous than Dublin. Some of these small towns are like battle fields after chucking out time at the weekend. Very scary indeed!

Several rural counties have seen abnormal and unexplained spikes for certain offences, an analysis of crime statistics for 2013 reveals.
The figures show Co Kerry has a significant problem with drunk and disorderly behaviour, while Co Waterford has a much higher rate of rape and sexual offences than other counties.
They also show homeowners are more likely to be burgled in Co Louth, while you are more likely to be the victim of a violent assault in Co Donegal.
Similarly, drink driving is a bigger problem in Co Monaghan than elsewhere.
A breakdown of more than a quarter a million criminal offences recorded in Ireland last year show that one person in every 20 was affected by a crime.
The number of recorded offences jumped by 11pc in Co Laois and a more modest 5pc in Co Longford with notable increases in drug and theft offences in both counties. Crime levels also remained static in Co Sligo and Co Tipperary.
In contrast, the crime rate in Co Cavan dropped by 20pc last year with sizeable reductions also recorded in crime levels in Co Mayo, Co Monaghan and Co Roscommon.

I’m from and live in Limerick City and there isn’t one thing wrong with this article. I love Limerick and would defend it to the death but I was out in the city centre on the 19th December and there was a gang of youths running through the streets carrying out one punch attacks on random people. It was shocking. And let’s get this straight, the streets of Limerick are never safe in the evening. I was in town midweek last week looking at the 3D lights on the side of Penneys and the intimidation by groups of youths is unreal. I’m from Limerick and consider myself streetwise so god help anyone who isn’t.

I think the real point is that this sort of thing happens in Limerick, just as it happens in every other city around the world. I’m also from Limerick, and I’ve personally also seen this kind of behaviour in Dublin, Cork, London, Frankfurt, Munich, Luxembourg, Paris, Glasgow, Edinburgh, St. Louis, as well as Limerick. It’s urban life. Simples.

    Last Weekend….?

Were these the only two victims of random violence in the entire state last weekend?

Is this a story of national importance?

The last Saturday before Christmas is turning into the messiest night of the year nationwide largely due to the 12 Pubs of Christmas crowd…

Because it is the messiest it is also the most violent….

What are the criteria for reporting individual incidents such as the minor incident reported above, not minor for the victims, but minor nonetheless?

Is it because it happened in Limerick?

I mean, violent incidents happen all over the country…just because national media do not report on them does not mean they are not happening….why do some cities and towns escape such media attention and others don’t?

There was a 41 year old American lady had her face kicked in on Shop St in Galway a number of weeks ago and not one media outlet reported it….

No media outlet could report on every minor crime like the one reported here, this story belongs on the pages on local news papers, not national news outlets….

If The Journal were to run every incident of this nature across the state there would be hundreds every weekend….

Noel is spot on….the “Limerick” angle assures national prominence.

No I mean the the woman who was viciously assaulted in August. She had to make an appeal for money to help her pay for reconstructive surgery

    http://evoke.ie/news/please-help-me-rebuild-my-face-begs-victim-of-galway-assault

Only a handful of media outlets helped her get much needed attention for her fundraising…

Not one media outlet covered the incident when it occurred…even tho there would have been an appeal for witnesses…

I don’t wish to single out one incident, it is only an example….alcohol fuelled violence is a huge problem in Ireland, it is a big policing issue or lack thereof….but by singling out one city it gives the impression it is a localised issue when it is not it is a problem accross the nation but requires balanced media reporting, something this state is severely lacking!!!

Another Limerick voice here, this happens in towns and cities all over the country Limerick is no better or worse. Lived in the Swansea for a bit. Used to be rough as hell at night by all accounts, but they centralised nightlife into one strip and have a permanent police presence, now its safe as houses. This could work in Limerick as most nightlife is now around Michael Street/Denmark street every. Two Gardai on patrol on busy nights would make a huge difference.
