Relatives of Syrian boy Alan Kurdi, who drowned off the coast of Turkey, have arrived in Canada

Alan’s uncle Mohammed and his wife and children hope to make a new live for themselves in Canada.

RELATIVES OF A Syrian boy whose lifeless body washed up on a Turkish beach, sparking worldwide concern for the refugee crisis, have landed in Canada

Mohammed Kurdi, his wife and their five children have arrived in Canada as refugees, sponsored by Mohammed’s sister Tima Kurdi, who wiped away tears as she greeted her relatives at Vancouver airport’s arrival gates.

Speaking through his sister, who translated from Arabic, Mohammed Kurdi thanked Canadians and the government for making his dream come true.

“I’m happy! Very happy!” he said in English to a crowd of reporters gathered around the family.

His teenage son Shergo said he was looking forward to going back to school and starting a new life.

Reunion

The reunion comes at the end of a difficult year for the family.

Tima and Mohammed’s three-year-old nephew, Alan Kurdi, drowned along with his five-year-old brother and their mother while crossing the waters between Turkey and Greece in September.

The boy’s father Abdullah Kurdi said after the tragedy that the family was trying to get to Canada to join his sister Tima. Abdullah has since declined to come to Canada. He now lives in Iraq’s Kurdistan region.

Tima said she wished Abdullah was in Canada. “All of us here wish you were here with us,” Tima said when asked if she had a message for him.

Canada Syrian Refugees Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is interviewed on tv as people wait to welcome Mohammed Kurdi and family at Vancouver Airport AP AP

Mohammed Kurdi has been in Germany since leaving his family in Turkey seven months ago to find work. He had yet to meet his youngest child, who was born in July, but the family reunited in Frankfurt before flying to Canada.

The Kurdis are among 25,000 Syrian refugees the Canadian government has pledged to welcome by the end of February. Immigration Minister John McCallum said last week the government will likely not meet its target of having 10,000 of them on Canadian soil by 1 January.

Thank you

The federal website that updates progress listed 2,413 refugees as having arrived in Canada by 26 December.

Mohammed Kurdi, his wife and children will all stay with Tima Kurdi and her family for now. The brother and sister are planning to work together at Tima Kurdi’s new hair salon, Kurdi Hair Design, in Port Coquitlam, British Columbia.

“Thank you Canadian people. Thank you Prime Minister Trudeau for opening the door and showing the world how everyone should welcome refugees and save lives,” Tima Kurdi said.

She said she hopes that other refugees remain hopeful.

Robert, Mohammed was in Germany and he left his family behind in Turkey (according to the article). It sounds like he did not endanger his family’s life – his brother Abdullah did. There are two different brothers and their respective families being talked about in the article. Abdullah’s wife and children died not Mohammed’s.

james mc, Jessie Paden made a perfectly sensible comment. The family were safe in Turkey and the mother and father put their children’s lives at great risk. If they had actually been fleeing war by sea people would think very differently about the actions they took. The mother and two children are now dead. It’s absolutely tragic and I feel very sorry for the woman and her two children and the father left behind, but it was also a risk that the parents should never have taken.

I feel sorry for the father. Quoting from an interview ‘I was only going there to secure a better life for my family. I worked in Istanbul for long hours for only 50 Liras a day to provide food for my kids. I had to work very hard so that I didn’t have to end up in the streets begging for food.’…. ‘ I mean Syrian workers only get 25% of wages in Turkey and are made to feel like it’s a favor by to let them work, do you understand what that means?’. What he said is backed up by this Reuters article about how Syrians are paid in Turkey http://mobile.reuters.com/article/idUSKBN0TN1DA20151204 They did originally flee Syria due to the war as researched independently by The Guardian ‘left Damascus in 2012 and headed to Aleppo and, when clashes happened there, they moved to Kobani’ which has also been decimated by fighting. He did take a risk but I wouldn’t be so harsh on the reasons. These people had solid jobs and normal lives before the war started. Working for a quarter wage is not something easily accepted when your life was once normal and people will always strive for a better life.

So if im fleeing war and manage to get my family to a safe country, yes i am a refugee. If i live in this new safe country for a number of years and then move to another country, i am now a migrant. Some of these refugees are out of Syria for years and have passed through multiple countries to cherry pick the best one. Im not trying to be unsympathetic but lets be honest here they weren’t exactly dodging bullets and were in no danger whatsoever when they risked this journey. If i put my family into an dangerous situation then id be guilty of bad parenting and rightly so. This man is responsible for all these deaths and to say anything else is nonsense. He was living in Turkey for years…not Syria!

Waste of time Bill…. most people engage in this despicable guilt-tripping and finger pointing to avoid the feelings of helplessness and guilt. How anyone could say anything other than god bless the child and his family, is truly beyond me. Irish history blah blah, suffering is universal and if we were more in touch with our own history of forced migration while being vilified and demonised (which happened for a very long time), then our only response would be one of sympathy and empathy.

A lot of western media have truly done a job on peoples’ mindsets, making them ‘question’ why he was fleeing Turkey etc. He wouldn’t be the first parent to endanger his child’s life by making reckless decisions under stress, still, it’s no reason to be disrespectful and lacking in empathy.

I douth the Irish people would have risked the coffin ships if the were living in a safe country with a job, home and food. The Irish who landed in America did so to prevent starvation and to save their lives, hence they could be regarded as refugees. This man was hunting down an earlier way to Canada and to get get his teeth fixed therefore he is a migrant. He risked he family for financial reasons and they died because of what he done. I believe he is guilty of discraseful parenting jand should be jailed for manslaughter. Please don’t confuse what he done to the people who risked the coffin ships during the famine because it isn’t like for like.

Trying to compare this situation to Irish people fleeing the famine is such a load of ignorant BS.

Nobody blamed the family for fleeing Syria to Turkey as refugees.

People blame them (the father) for subsequently sending his kids from Turkey to western Europe not as refugees but as economic migrants. And risking their lives to do so – with tragic consequences.

There was no need for the family to leave Turkey in order to survive.

Interesting that some people don’t want to point the finger at the father much.

The idea that we should just open the borders and welcome migrants coming in illegally across the med because its the “right thing to do” is stupid and dangerous.
