Bomb squad deployed to Tallaght to make 'legacy device' safe

The device was spotted by a member of the public in a river in the Dodder Valley.

Updated 5.51pm

A ‘LEGACY DEVICE’ spotted by a member of the public in a river in Tallaght has been made safe by an army bomb squad.

The suspect device was found in a river at Seskin View in the Dodder Valley area earlier this afternoon.

The bomb disposal team was deployed to the area at 3.05pm. They made the device, which was heavily corroded, safe at the scene.

According to a Defence Forces statement, the heavily weathered device was exposed to the elements for some time.

The area was declared safe at 4.20pm and material was handed over to gardaí to assist in their investigation.

This is the 142nd callout for the bomb squad this year.

The Defence Forces released its army operation statistics yesterday, outlining the work they do.

Bomb disposal comes under its remit for providing aid to civil powers.

Throughout 2015, army personnel undertook 130 prisoner escorts and 11 explosives escorts. Another 260 members were involved in the security operation for the visit of Prince Charles and Camilla in May.

Having bad car karma this year. Air con failed on the hottest day of the year. Wipers failed today on the wettest day ever.
Can’t wait to see what happens when it freezes.

I’m from Cork, I don’t have a chip on my shoulder.

Occasionally, people say that as a Cork man I have a chip on my shoulder.

If you say so lads, but making a baseless statement about me for no reason other than my hometown, is hardly witty insult of the month.
