Over 600,000 people watched the first episode of Rebellion last night

Strong figures for the first episode in the much-talked about new season.

NEW RTÉ DRAMA Rebellion pulled in hundreds of thousands of viewers last night.

The brand-new 1916 television drama drew an average of 619,000 viewers and a 41% share of the available audience watched the hour-long episode.

An additional 45,000 watched the first episode of Rebellion on RTÉ One+1, and 9,200 on RTÉ Player where it remains available to viewers.

The five-part series is a key part of RTÉ’s centenary coverage, and stars Charlie Murphy, Ruth Bradley, Sarah Greene and Brian Gleeson. It depicts the events of Easter 1916 as seen through the eyes of a group of friends – all fictional characters – from Dublin, Belfast and London.

The series is written by Colin Teevan (the man who wrote last year’s Charlie) and directed by Aku Louhimies from Finland.

Last night The Voice of Ireland attracted an average audience of 486,900 (share 33%), while Francis Brennan’s brand new series of At Your Service attracted an average audience of 455,500, and Fair City’s storyline featuring Heather (Una Kavanagh) brought in 478,000 viewers.

Glen Killane, Managing Director of RTÉ Television, said: “[Rebellion] is a major part of the RTÉ 1916 output and marks the beginning of a series of programming across television, radio and online that audiences can engage with, understand, commemorate and celebrate 1916.”

Other 1916 television programmes due on RTÉ this centenary year include 1916, a  three-part documentary series narrated by Liam Neeson; Joe Duffy’s Children of the Revolution; Michael Portillo’s The Enemy Files, and Bob Geldof on Yeats.

That article sums up the taste of a large portion of this country’s viewership. ‘At your service’ and ‘Voice of Ireland’ with huge numbers. I can see ‘Operation Transformation’ pulling in 2m plus at this rate. Good God! Watched Rebellion. The acting was quite good. The production quality itself seems good. Hopefully the action will extend beyond one usage of the F word next week and location might move outside a mocked up room in a tenement house. It looked like every scene was filmed inside the Little Museum of Dublin.

Television audiences aren’t measured the same way as a Census. They’re measured against what’s know as Total TV, the amount of people watching television at the particular time the show is broadcast. This is how the share is calculated. Weird, I know but it’s more accurate for share than always comparing it to the Universe ( 4 million or 3.3 million adults).

If you want to know what really happened in 1916 and what was achieved, just take some time out of your day to travel to Number 16 Moore Street and soak up it all up.

Had it not been for the patriots and martyrs who took it upon themselves to pre-empt Home Rule, your No 16 experience would be an altogether different experience.

While you’re there, why not drop into Selfridges, M&S, Tesco or HMV on your way home to watch Premier League Football, Coronation Street or Eastenders.

Too much swearing which is not historically accurate as was the reference to Sinn Fein
Also having too many charcters was confusing at times.
Sean O Casey covered the rising very well in Plough and the Stars with less than 10 characters and great emotional intensity.
Apart from that it was good

Certain households have a box that tracks what they view. Each member of the household has a unique code to sign into this box which registers them as a unique demographic (men aged 16-34, kids under 9). They then take the amount viewing on the boxes and apply it to the rest of the population, for example 41% watched it on the boxes so approximately 41% watched it overall. It’s not perfect but it’s more accurate than a survey.

For 10 seconds. It is typical of statistics, massaged to suit. It is the same wth the census form and the Irish language- structured in such a way to suit certain vested interests. The people making the money from grants and funding need to be named and shamed for robbing the taxpayers and wasting their money. Build homes instead.
