Two-year-old boy crushed to death by chest of drawers

Archie Tafts was rushed to hospital after the incident yesterday afternoon but died a short time later.

A TWO-YEAR-OLD boy has died after a chest of drawers fell on him in Antrim.

It’s understood that Archie Tafts was crushed in the incident which happened yesterday afternoon in the family home in Cloghmills.

He was taken to hospital for treatment but died a short time later.

Heather Loughridge, who works at the Reformed Presbyterian Church mothers and toddlers group which Archie attended, told BBC News:

He was a lovely, smiley wee fellow …. he always took part in the singing and dancing and really enjoyed it.

“When you hear these things, it puts everything else into perspective. It’s hard for people to take in.”

The PSNI have released a statement is which Archie’s parents have expressed a desire for privacy.

The family thanked those who expressed their condolences but added that they will not be making a public comment.

It states that the family have suffered a tremendous loss and they wish to be left alone to grieve for their son.

Ive had a couple of near misses with my little guy. He opened the fridge freezer door and must have pulled down on it, the whole fridge freezer started to fall, I was lucky I was in the same room that I could run and catch the thing before it landed on him.

We got rid of that fridge freezer and got a side by side America style one.

My heart goes out to the family

We had two close calls with our son over the years, one with a large filing cabinet when he was 2 and another with a chest of drawers at age 4. I feel so sad for this family and it is a real tragedy…my thoughts are with them.

Unfortunately they would hilight dangerous situations. May he rest in peace and help his parents deal with this.

I hope this tragic incident will be a lesson to parents who do not securely screw their drawers to the wall. Most standing furniture today comes with additional screws and instructions on how to do this.

I get what you saying Ian but sadly I’m sure they know that now .People spend so much time watching fireplaces and closing front doors that they never think of things like the chest of drawers.
