'Abusive' passenger charged more than €9k after causing diversion to Shannon

She also received a lifetime ban.

A WOMAN WHOSE allegedly abusive behaviour caused a flight to divert to Shannon Airport has been charged more than €9,000 by the airline as well as receiving a lifetime ban.

The 42-year-old woman from Sunderland was arrested by gardaí after the flight from Tenerife to Newcastle made an emergency landing in Ireland on New Year’s Day.

She was taken to Shannon Garda Station and later released without charge, with a file prepared for the DPP.

In a statement today, Jet2.com said the woman has received an invoice for £6,800 (€9,100), and given a lifetime ban.

The airline alleged that the woman was ‘aggressive and abusive’, and that it was necessary to hand her over to gardaí to protect the safety of those onboard the plane.

Phil Ward, managing director of Jet2.com, said:

Passengers were inconvenienced on New Year’s Day because this woman’s unacceptable behaviour towards our crew caused a substantial delay. We will therefore be pursuing the bill for the cost and we will do everything we can to assist the Irish authorities in working towards a potential prosecution.

She was released without charge but could still be charged if DPP decides otherwise. Fair play to the airline for billing her but what chance do they have of getting paid.

I’m delighted, she’ll end up not paying but I’m sick of hearing of selfish narcissistic phucs ruining things for decent folk by being classless and belligerent. I wouldn’t give them jail time I’d sit them in a room for 5 hours, point at them and repeatedly say “you’re a bollox, you’re an awful bollox”

Drink is probably definitely the issue. I love a drink on a plane but some are so eager to begin their holidays in the airport. How often are the pubs in Dublin airport full at 6am with people heading off somewhere.

Millions of people fly each day, and a good number of them enjoy drinks onboard with no issue whatsoever. Why should everyone go without because of the relatively few who do wrong?

There is a case for breathalysing some passengers before they board a plane.
    Especially on New Years Day.
A breath test for alcohol before she boarded might have saved her a hefty bill.

    Not true Jerry!

A lot of destinations with and outside Europe require Advanced Passenger Information to be shared with authorities including all your passport details. The airlines run this through their own database and no fly lists. Even on certain routes where this is not required the name will be enough and when a problem name appears the airline generally sends someone from the asset protection department to over see checkin!

The biggest problem these days however is that airlines have no way of sharing their no fly lists with each other so it’s just a case of flying with another airline!!!
