Commuting liveblog: Icy roads causing dangerous driving conditions across the country

Here’s all the information to get you where you’re going this morning.

IT’S FRIDAY, IT’S the end of the week, and it’s freezing cold. Welcome to TheJournal.ie’s commuting liveblog for this morning.

We’ll be with you until 9am, bringing you all the latest traffic, transport and weather news.

Morning, all. First up today: the weather.

Met Éireann has warned of very cold temperatures this morning with frost and icy patches across the country – which is causing problems for drivers.

There’s a status orange warning about snow-ice for Donegal, Leitrim, Mayo and Sligo, and a status yellow warning for the same conditions in Longford, Cavan Monaghan, Galway and Roscommon.

Be careful out there.

Road temperatures are below zero in many areas and a few degrees below that in at least one part of the country, creating problems for drivers.

Icy conditions have been reported in the following areas:

  • Cork city, particularly on the South City Link Road and the Kinsale Road roundabout
  • The N66 Loughrea/Gort Road in Galway
  • The R161 Ballivor/Kinnegad road in Meath/Westmeath

A reminder from the gardaí to take extra care this morning:

The weather has caused some problems for public transport across the country, particularly for Bus Éireann. Here’s all the reported disruptions right now:

Luas

The Luas Red Line has been delayed since 7.49am due to an incident at James.

Bus Éireann

At least six Bus Éireann services in Cork have been disrupted because of the weather Here’s the latest list:

  • Route 220: No service to/from Liosbourne. Not serving Brightwater or Myrtleville
  • Route 207: Not serving Glenheights Park, Glenthorn or Dublin Hill
  • Route 216: Not serving Marybourough Woods
  • Route 215: Not serving Kileens or North Point Business Park.
  • Route 235: Operating with delays.

Irish Rail

Earlier delays on the Longford to Pearse Street have now been cleared but all services are now running without disruption across the rail network.

Here’s more detail about the cold weather this morning and how it’s set to last through to the weekend. Boo.

It’s currently 1 to 2 degrees Celsius in Dublin, Galway and Cork, and it’s set to fall between zero and -4 degrees tonight.

brrrr

There’s a crash in Dublin on Grange Road in Donaghmede. AA Roadwatch says traffic can get by with care.

If it’s safe to do so, let us know how the roads are where you are. You can tweet us @thejournal_ie, leave a comment below or send me an email at christine@thejournal.ie.

Cork’s 96FM is warning about black ice around Kinsale, Belgooly, and Monastery Road in Rochestown.

Bandon and Church Hill, Passage West are both also very icy.

Dubliners: Those delays to the Luas Red Line are still in place due to the incident at James’s which happened at around 7.45am.

One tweeter says that there was a crash involving a Luas tram and a truck.

In the comments, Accord Moan Eye says that parts of Cork are treacherous at the moment, and that traffic is backed up on the N28.

First the Red Line, now it’s the Green Line.

The Luas has warned that the entire Green Line has a delay of about 15 minutes because of a signalling fault.

Luas

Cork seems to have been hit the worst by the icy conditions this morning, leading to traffic problems across the city and county.

Cork’s 96FM, which has been keeping track of it all, says that there is a massive tailback on the Bandon to Kilbrittain road and that the Glanworth to Fermoy road is also very bad.

Here’s a snapshot of how Cork traffic looks right now:

Take care if you’re driving in Mayo this morning: AA Roadwatch says roads are icy on the N17 and the N60.

Non-commuting news: here’s today’s 9 at 9 with the big stories from this morning (including how well Ireland did with the Oscar nominations).

Good news, Dubliners: The Luas Red Line is back to normal now after the incident at St James’s Hospital.

Bus Éireann has published a list of all the disruptions to services in Cork this morning. Eight passenger services are either cancelled, delayed or not serving the full route, while there are severe disruptions to lots of school bus routes:

That’s it for this morning. Thanks to everyone for the comments and tweets. See you back here bright and early on Monday morning.

People are causing dangerous conditions, not ice. Conditions are conditions.

No. Icy conditions ‘slow things down’. Things like not indicating properly or not watching your mirrors, or unrestrained children, or worn tyres, now that’s what creates dangerous driving conditions.

It would do you well to spend some time living outside Dublin and then you’d realise how easy you really have it. There were no buses running from my hometown in Cork this morning…think of all the people who rely purely on that bus (because we they don’t have the transport options you have) to get to work. And that happened every icy day in the past few years when I was living there.

We’re not all commuters. People drive in the morning for all sorts of reasons, not just to work.
