Dublin Airport flights resume after 100 kmh winds

Normal flight operations have resumed in Dublin Airport, as heavy winds earlier this afternoon begin to abate.

FLIGHT OPERATIONS at Dublin Airport are returning to normal this evening after a number of flights were diverted earlier due to heavy crosswinds.

A number of flights which were due to arrive in Dublin in mid-afternoon and early evening were cancelled, with a number of other inbound flights redirected to Shannon or Belfast airports.

Dublin Airport Authority advised passengers intending to travel from Dublin this evening to contact their airline before travelling to the airport.

Wind speeds at the airport reached 54 knots – or 100 km/h – this afternoon, as a storm warning remains in effect over many parts of the country.

Gale and small craft warnings are in place around other coastal areas.

Why can’t they use runway 16/34? As stated on the DAA website, runway 16/34 is there for “primarily for cross-wind operations” . I don’t think I’ve ever been on a flight that has used runway 16/34!

It still suffers from the similar crosswinds, only at a marginally lesser angle! Plus several wide body aircraft including a American 767 from Chicago and an Aer Lingus 330 from Malaga were caught up in it and in those sort of conditions it’s not necessarily safe to use the shorter runway!

Runway 16 faces 160 degrees on a compass; runway 28 faces 280 degrees on a compass; the wind was gusting from 220 degrees, right between the two. And the wind tends to veer slightly more westerly with the gusts, so it would make the runway 16 crosswind worse.

Eamon. The daa dont have a say which runway should be used. Its down to atc as they know the wind speed and direction and rwy 16/34 can be to small for airbus a330s in this weather.I think its better to be safe then sorry in cases like this. After all you cant blame the d.a.a for an act of god.

The rain out this way was Biblical for about half an hour there. Very windy all day, not surprised it’s affecting flights. There’s still a fair few of them up there though, I can hear them every now and then, or maybe it’s just one circling over and over……

We managed to land at 2.15 this afternoon but it was quite a ride! It was absolutely wild on the runway.

I was parked beside the runway for a time yesterday. I some some extremely hair-raising landings, including a turboprop commuter that had to drop its left wing sharply just a few metres above the runway. I also saw one missed approach – looked like that one headed straight to Belfast instead of going around – and one plane that started down the runway, backtracked and took off on the second attempt. An “interesting” day for pilots.
