Want to see the real Rebellion? These photographs bring you to the heart of the Rising

It’s part of an exhibition by the National Library of Ireland.

WITH MARTIAL LAW in place during the Easter Rising, taking photographs would have been enough to get you arrested.

It is with that in mind that a new photographic exhibition of the Rebellion running for most of this year should be celebrated.

‘Rising’ at the National Library of Ireland (NLI) on Kildare Street in Dublin features some of the most important moments of the Rising as well as an illustration of the destruction that followed.

“When we selected the content for the exhibition, we were keen to address certain questions,” explains curator Sara Smyth.

How did Dublin look during Easter Week 1916, as fighting raged and buildings fell? What kind of landscape, physical and political, was left after the surrender?

In total there are 60 images as part of the collection with a number of them in large scale as part of an attempt to convey the Rising’s impact on Dublin City Centre.

Other photographs in the exhibition include members of the public discovering the Proclamation on Easter Monday and lines of Irish Volunteers and Irish Citizen Army soldiers in the GPO.

The exhibition is part of NLI’s 1916 commemorations which also has 70,000 images available online.

An exhibition which focuses on the leaders themselves called ‘Signatories’ is also running parallel to the photographic archive and runs until the end of the year.

It’s also planned that the personal papers and photographs of the seven signatories of the proclamation will be put online.

The exhibition is augmented by other audio recordings from letters and diaries that detail first-hand accounts of the Rising.

The NLI’s ‘Rising’ exhibition is open seven days a week until 5pm and is free to enter. It runs until October.

If you could tell any of the people in these photo back then that in a 100 years time you could view them anywhere in the world on a device that fits in your hand they’d say you were mad. What will things be like on this day in 2116?

After a falling out, The Edge murders Bono with one or Larry’s drumsticks framing the murder on the drummer. Bono’s brain is then installed into a super death robot and he becomes our overlord and master. Every family has to give up their first born to the Church of Bono where the he sucks their souls out to feed his ego. Our only one hope is to venture the lands across off shore bank accounts and Dutch shell companies to find the elusive Sword of Taxing and smite him

Yes, death. There will be so much death in the future that even I will be dead. Other people will be alive, but that will be no use because in the future’s future they will be dead too. Death always wins in the end. In fact, the only thing that never dies is death itself. Death is cunning. The small saving grace is that we’ll all be too dead to think about death when we are dead. However, it’s worth pointing out that we will be dead.

    Scary.

    Going forward.

2116 will likely be not much different to 2016. Technology does not necessarily continue to advance at a linear pace. In fact since about 1970 there have been very few new inventions, just refinements. Even the internet was around in a form in the 1960′s in the US defense department. The golden age was between about 1850 to 1950.

For previous generations that were forced to emigrate like mine in the early fifties to the UK because the Irish state was a complete economic waste land since independence, for those people still alive the 1916 centenary means very little and just evokes bitter memories best forgotten, with no prospect of making a living here because of policies persued by previous governments entire generations were forced to emigrate, who then proceeded to ignore them,im pretty sure it wasn’t what those who made the supreme sacrifice in 1916 had in mind for the country.

The best way to commemorate 1916, is speak out against the Cromwellian policies being imposed on the Palestinians.

Israel is using the cover of the Syrian war to accelerate the dispossession of the Palestinian people.

    http://www.theguardian.com/world/2016/feb/07/palestinian-villagers-fear-further-home-demolitions-by-israeli-army

Palestinian villagers in remote parts of the southern West Bank are bracing themselves for more home demolitions, a week after Israeli bulldozers destroyed 23 homes leaving more than 100 people homeless.
