A MAN HAS been rescued from a Russian ship off the coast of Cork this evening after an incident in the ship’s engine room the coastguard has confirmed.

It is understood that the patient suffered burn related injuries in an engine room accident.

The Shannon based coastguard helicopter, Rescue 115, evacuated the injured crewman from the vessel, the 110-metre-long Armenak Babaev, approximately 150 miles west of Valentia, Co Kerry.

It’s understood that the helicopter had to take on extra fuel at Kerry Airport due to the lengthy distance the ship was from shore when the incident occurred.

The captain of the ship was told to change direction for the coast in order to simplify the long-distance operation.

The injured man was airlifted at 5.45pm and was delivered to Cork Airport at about 7pm, from where he was taken to Cork University Hospital.

Top cover communications, which are required for long distance helicopter missions, were provided by an Air Corps Casa.

The operation was coordinated by the Coast Guard Rescue Coordination centre in Valentia, who received the request earlier today when the vessel was over 200 miles from the coast.

Well done to Rescue 115 and the Air Corps. That was some distance from the coast, nearly the same as Cork to Dublin.I hope the man makes a full recovery.Cant imagine the agony from burns in the engine room.

Again brave air Corp men and women. . It’s a pity that the hospital decided to get rid of the helicopter pad it had to make space for more car parking spaces . Having to land at the airport seven miles away is disgraceful and time consuming for the patient and emergency services!

Our exclusive economic zone extends 200km. This ship was more than 200 miles out so close to 300km

Great job by our world class coast guard as always but just one thing. That flight path graphic suggests the Coast of Kerry, not Cork.

All of our negotiations and trade deals with Europe/EEC/EC since 1973 have benefited our farmers at the expense of our fisheries so clearly consecutive governments have been of the same opinion regarding the importance of perhaps our greatest natural resource
