The Daily Fix: Thursday

In tonight’s Fix: Muammar Gaddafi is dead; the Race for the Áras continues apace with less than a week to polling day, and how one Tullamore pub is celebrating the death of a despot…

EVERY DAY, TheJournal.ie brings you a round-up of all the day’s main news as well as the bits and pieces that you may have missed.

Gaddafi death…

  • Fugitive Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi is dead. He was killed this morning in his hometown of Sirte by National Transitional Council forces with pictures and video of his grisly end broadcast worldwide. Here’s the latest including video.
  • With Gaddafi’s death confirmed we’ve been looking back at the life and times of the autocratic ruler in pictures and video.
  • In pictures: here’s how people in Libya and around the world have been reacting to his death.
  • World leaders and from some of those affected by the atrocities Gaddafi is alleged to have masterminded have also been reacting to the news. Their thoughts have varied from the cautious to those who are planning on buying champagne.

Race for the Áras…

  • Michael D Higgins’s campaign has said that a statement criticising Davis Norris’s record on the bank guarantee was released “in error”. The statement said that Norris had been “economical with the truth” about his voting record on the controversial guarantee three years ago.
  • Perhaps not entirely unrelated to that Norris has ruled out a possible vote transfer pact with Higgins although the pair remain good friends.
  • Dana Rosemary Scallon is back on the campaign trail after the dramatic tyre blowout on her car on Tuesday evening. Gardaí are investigating claims that the blowout was a result of sabotage.
  • Martin McGuinness has denied that he met the man later convicted of killing Detective Jerry McCabe while he was on the run as McCabe’s widow Anne has claimed. She told one newspaper she does not believe he is suitable candidate for president.
  • Meanwhile, Gay Mitchell has spoken exclusively to TheJournal.ie this evening, here’s what he’s had to say.

If you can figure out what that’s about, let us know in the comments…

In today’s other news…

  • The troika of the EU, IMF and ECB has given Ireland another pat on the back for its progress so far with the international bailout programme but it has warned that many challenges lie ahead including the December budget.
  • Eta has called a definitive end to its armed conflict in the Basque region of northern Spain saying it is now time to  ”look to the future with hope, it is also time to act with responsibility and valour.”
  • One person has died following violent clashes between rioters and peaceful demonstrators in Athens this afternoon where parliament is voting through austerity measures deemed necessary under the terms of the country’s bailout.
  • The man accused of murdering the Bristol architect Jo Yeates has given evidence in court today apologising for the “hell” he put her parents through and recounting the moments that led to Yeates’s death last December.
  • Dozens of wild animals were shot dead by authorities in Ohio after the dangerous creatures were released from a wildlife reserve by their owner before he took his own life.
  • Fancy a trip to the movies this weekend? Then check out our Three Trailer Thursday to see the best of what’s new in cinemas. And if you don’t get to the flicks this weekend you can still win a trip to see The Ides of March on Monday?
  • Finally, a pub in Tullamore is holding a tribute to Muammar Gaddafi tonight where the person who comes up with the best song to sum up the former Libyan dictator’s life will get three free pints. “It’s only a bit of fun,” Brewery Tap manager Paul Bell told TheJournal.ie today saying that a song which signifies Gaddafi in a very bad way will be the winner. “The worse  the better,” he added.

Suggestion. If viable, the seized drugs could be cleaned and refined so it may be possible to use the end product in pharma

@Paul: good idea, only there’s very little coke in irelands coke, and the way our authorities price Cannabis, we be buying back 4 fold from pharma…. But your progressive thinking is what’s needed as opposed to all the nay sayers.

@Todd Hebert: i saw a guy last week beating the shxt out of his girlfriend outside their house. They were fighting over heroin. I intervened & called the guards. Drugs are a poison on our society. We need more regulation & stricter sentencing along with adequate rehabilitation resources.

@Niall Binéad: I believe it’s a pun; marijuana sometime being referred to colloquially as ‘grass’, which is also a verb meaning to inform the authorities of another’s (illicit) activities.
