200 new jobs in ground handling on the way at Dublin Airport

Separately, a healthcare company has announced 200 jobs in Carlow, Cork and Tipperary.

Updated at 11.30am

200 NEW JOBS are being created at Dublin Airport. Swissport Ireland Limited, which manages ground handling at the facility, announced the creation of the positions this morning.

The jobs will be in customer service, ramp handling, flight operations and security, amongst other areas.

Ground handling business (essentially the servicing of aircraft while they’re on the tarmac) grew by 23% in 2015 and is expected to grow by a further 10% this year. Some jobs are already being advertised online on the Swissport website.

“We are delighted to see Swissport’s business go from strength to strength at Dublin Airport,” Dublin Airport Managing Director Vincent Harrison said.

The recruitment of a further 200 jobs, on top of the 350 recently announced by Dublin Airport further endorses the economic impact of the airport.

Other jobs

Earlier today, 200 further jobs were announced by healthcare company MSD. The jobs will come on stream at three of the firm’s Irish sites by the end of the year.

MSD in Carlow, the company’s only standalone vaccine facility outside the US, is creating 110 new roles in production, engineering and quality control.

Its base in Brinny, Co Cork – which specialises in the fermentation and sterile filling of biotech products – is seeking 50 new hires in manufacturing, quality, technology, engineering, and environmental and safety.

MSD’s branch in Ballydine, Co Tipperary – which is involved in the research and development, formulation and manufacture of active pharmaceutical ingredients – will recruit 40 new employees, including process and chemical engineers and organic chemists by the end of 2016.

Cancer and hepatitis C

Ger Carmody, associate vice president at MSD in Tipperary, said: “Our state-of-the-art facilities in Carlow, Cork and Tipperary are leading the way in the development of new medicines, including MSD’s new treatments for cancer and hepatitis C, which are being manufactured in Ireland for the world market.

Oour Irish sites are involved in the production of over 60% of MSD’s global top 20 products.

MSD already employs more than 2,000 people across five sites in Ireland – in Dublin, Carlow, Cork, Tipperary and Wicklow. Its Irish operations had a turnover of €3 billion in 2014.

The company has operated in Ireland for over 50 years. It produces medicines in areas such as diabetes, heart disease, oncology, infectious diseases and anaesthesia.

With reporting by Daragh Brophy.

Ireland created 55,000 jobs in 2015. Germany created 300,000 new jobs. Adjusting for population, that means Ireland is now creating jobs at over three times the rate of Germany. A few more years of this and we’ll be back on our feet, provided we don’t throw it to the dogs by electing muppets and socialists.

How many of these were full-time positions compared to Germany? How many were created by FDI compared to Germany? How many jobs were lost in the same period compared to Germany?

Modern airport workers put in the most unsocial hours of just about anyone in the national workforce, a baggege handler or aircraft cleaner works virtually a different shift every day with the first shift starting at 3am and the last shift finishing at 1Am and a rake of shifts in between. approx 8 different shifts pw, these kind of working hours are not conducive to good health physically or mentally and then theres the constant smell of aircraft fumes hanging over the airport apron, I realise someone’s got to do this work but as someone who’s been there done that I wouldn’t recommend it

I suppose yes they are responsible for the jobs. Company run by someone with fg links or supports fg gets lucrative gov contract, hires more people. The problem is the company might not be well run and the gov is temporary so then we get job losses when the contract ends and the next gov wanna give lucrative contract to someone else.

Flying almost weekly I’m not a fan of swissport, they’re an outsource agent for airline customer service and baggage…

They don’t seem to give a toss given they don’t actually work for the airline you bought the ticket from. You can be the airlines best customer and end up butting heads with a rude, poorly trained ‘computer says no’ type person who will happily keep you waiting in a 3hr queue and couldn’t care less if you get where you’re going or where in the world your bag is.

Don’t bother complaining to the airline either, they just reply with that’s not our problem, it’s not our staff that’s an outsource provider we use.

Nothing in this article suggests Swissport are taking jobs from Aer Lingus (who were actually a private company until bought by IAG) Have there been any mention in the media/online about Aer Lingus “immediately pulling out of ground handling at Dublin”? pretty sure I saw their staff still there when I flew out 2 weeks ago.
That picture of an Aer Lingus plane is just a stock “Dublin Airport” photo.

Not going to happy the scale of Aer Lingus delivers cost major cost savings doing it yourself.

What may happen once contracts are up for British Airways, Iberia and Vueling, they could be taking over by Aer Lingus as part of IAG if Aer Lingus can do it cheaper.
