GEORGE REDMOND, THE former assistant Dublin city and county manager, has died after a short illness.

RTÉ reports that Redmond passed away at Connolly Hospital, Blanchardstown. He was 92.

He is survived by his wife Maureen and his sons David and John.

Redmond worked all his life for Dublin county and its local authorities, beginning in 1941 and retiring 48 years later in 1989 aged 65.

He is best known to the public however for his involvement in several planning scandals investigated by the Mahon Tribunal (originally the Flood Tribunal).

That tribunal was set up in 1997 to investigate corruption in planning matters involving illicit payments to politicians and issues with land rezoning. It concluded its investigations in 2012.

The tribunal’s third report in 2004 found that Redmond had received a corrupt payment in relation to planning and had attempted to obstruct the tribunal’s investigations.

Those findings were rescinded in December 2014.

Redmond was convicted of corruption in 2003 and served six months of a year-long sentence before that verdict was overturned.
