Weather warning continues today

The bad weather is expected to continue today, particularly in the east – so the gardaí and Road Safety Authority are urging people to exercise caution on the roads.

KEEP YOUR UMBRELLA handy and take care on the roads – because the bad weather is to continue into today.

Met Éireann has continued to issue a severe weather warning, saying that a further 25 – 40mm of rain is likely to fall in east Leinster and much of Ulster.

Coasts from Erris Head to Fair head to Howth head and the Irish sea north of anglesey are expected to experience south to southeasterly gales while small crafts are warned that westerly winds will reach force 6 this morning on certain coasts.

It says that while this morning might be drizzly, widespread rain will develop again in the eastern half of the country during the day.

It is expected to extend into the east of Connacht and the rest of Ulster during the afternoon, with heavy rainfall expected in Ulster, Leinster and parts of Munster.

Local flooding might affect the above areas and tonight there will be further heavy rain with lowest temperatures from four to nine degrees celsuis.

There is even a risk of slight ground frost in the south west.

In its long-range forecast, Irish Weather Online predicts that a second round of heavy rain is “70 per cent likely” today and should arrive by 12 noon in the eastern part of the country.

But it predicts by Wednesday, there will only be outbreaks of light rain.

Gardaí reiterated today their call for drivers to exercise caution on the roads as some roads remain waterlogged.

Yesterday gardaí said drivers should give extra time for their journeys, ensure their lights are on and be aware of driving conditions.

While there were no major incidents overnight, a garda spokesperson said there had been smaller incidents experienced around the country.

The Road Safety Authority has asked road users to ensure they are prepared for the winter weather, saying they should consider having their vehicle serviced.

It also encouraged drivers to use dipped headlights during the day to ensure they remain visible and for cyclists and pedestrians to wear high-visibility jackets and carry a torch if possible.

In the case of severe weather striking Ireland, the RSA has a special section of its website containing advice for drivers.

Yesterday, a Crosshaven RNLI lifeboat had to assist a kayaker who had become capsized in Cork harbour.
