Netflix movie and TV streaming service coming to Ireland

The online subscription service is expected to launch here early next year.

THE US VIDEO streaming service Netflix has announced it is expanding into the Irish and UK market early next year.

The online subscription company began operating its streaming service in the US in 2007. It has since expanded that service to over 40 countries and has over 25 million subscribers.

Netflix says that over 700 devices, including iPads, PCs, Blu-ray disc players, the Xbox 360, Wii and PS3, can stream from its library of films and TV shows for a monthly payment.

Announcing its latest expansion plans, the company says Irish residents interested in its service can sign up for an email alert which will let them know when it is launching here. It is expecting to introduce the streaming service here in early 2012.

Pricing for the Irish market and supported devices will be announced closer to the launch date.

Netflix first launched over a decade ago, operating a subscription-based DVD mailing service.

It costs $7.99 a month in the US – I wonder what the lucky Irish will get charged? I’m guessing €30+

This is awesome, I really hope studios/license holders let a decent selection be available from launch here.

I’m very happy that (finally) some sort of a legal entertainment package is available. I’ve kept my eyes on Netflix, LoveFilm and the like, and they provide something that I would gladly pay for.

The days of popping out to the video store are gone, and even with DVRs in our living rooms, we’re still restricted to on-demand content: this should be very good indeed- once the companies, as a previous poster stated, allow Irish users to get their hands on a good deal of content. That’s always been the problem with Ireland: we get screwed on copyright allowances.

Yes, this company are out to make money, but I’m glad at least *someone* is starting to provide a legal platform. I’d happily pay a tenner or so for unlimited movie and TV streaming- it’s the price of two or three pints, and could very well replace cable or digital TV, for me anyway. Who knows!

Such good news only if we get the same level of content as the US and not a stripped down version of just older movies due to licencing.

They really could make such a dent on piracy as this is sometimes the only way ppl can access their favourite shows although sky are only a few days behind the US with the most popular shows now.

Would definitely pay for this service if it’s no more than maybe e10.

Nail on the coffin for xtravision I’m afraid but it was only only a matter of time and no great surprise.

Most of their streaming movies and television programs are old even in the US while you can get new movies on dvd. This is the problem Netflix has the movies studios are not going to let them stream new movies and they want to try to get away from having to mail dvd’s. It used to be you could get 1 dvd and streaming for $9.99 but they split it now so it is $7.99 for streaming and $7.99 for 1 dvd at time. Still not big money but people were used to it for $9.99 and unless you are really dedicated to watching and mailing back the movies you might be better off using Amazon streaming or getting movies from the Redbox at the grocery store for $1 for new movies and just using Netflix streaming for older movies.
