AS IT HAPPENED: Politicians scramble for last few votes before broadcast ban

Enda did the ‘steady hand challenge’ on TV3 – and TDs across the land were out pressing the flesh.

TOMORROW MORNING, MILLIONS of people will cast their votes and decide the next government.

But there are still hands to shake and minds to change before the polls open…

Here’s what party leaders, candidates and canvassers were up to earlier – during the last few intensive hours of campaigning before the 2pm TV and radio moratorium.

Morning folks. Paul Hosford here taking you through the morning of this last day of campaigning.

Right now, we’re waiting on Enda Kenny to be interviewed on TV3′s Ireland AM.

So, what’s on the slate for today?

While Enda Kenny is on TV3, the AAA-PBP will have a stall at Londis on Westmoreland Street in Dublin.

Kenny will then move to Dublin city to campaign, before a joint press event with Labour leader Joan Burton.

Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin will be in Cork all day, shoring up support in his own constituency, while it’s back to Moore Street for Gerry Adams.

IMAG0255

Our newsroom gathered around to watch Enda Kenny take part in TV3′s Steady Hand Challenge.

One staffer remarked that this was “our moon landing”.

Enda didn’t make it all the way around.

Are the coalition getting their message across? Here’s what radio host and communications expert Anton Savage thinks:

UCD Students’ Union are organising a huge carpool to match students driving home to vote this Friday with students who’re stuck for a lift. Anyone can apply to be a part here.

The Union of Students Ireland have also teamed up with Irish Rail to encourage students to get home for the vote.

For some people, count day is the best day.

Personally, I love it. It’s like a political nerd’s Christmas.

Adrian Shanahan agrees.

As Snow Patrol once said: when it’s all over, we still have to clear up. Posters have been up a couple of weeks, but after tomorrow they have to come down again.

Candidates have a week to take theirs down. Beyond that, you can complain to your local litter warden or council.

After the question wasn’t asked in the Prime Time leaders’ debate earlier this week, Enda Kenny was asked about the Eighth Amendment on TV3 today.

Some of the experiences of women who have come forward here, who’ve been very courageous… It is a profound issue and it’s not one to be sort of spoken of glibly in politics to say ‘let’s have a referendum’.

I’ve been on this liveblog for nearly two hours and haven’t posted this.

Just hoping I haven’t been fired already:

Today’s Irish Independent quotes Leo Varadkar as saying that a grand coalition of Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael wouldn’t work.

That hasn’t stopped Paddy Power making it the most likely government next time around. The betting reflects the idea that nobody really knows what’s going to happen.

Undoubtedly, some of the analysis over the weekend will focus on social media.

Here’s a comprehensive analysis of the tweets from the campaign by analyst Barry James.

It shows that some candidates are very active on Twitter and Gerry Adams gets a lot of retweets.

Lorraine Higgins’ leaflet asks not for votes because she’s a woman, but because of her merits.

One of which is being a woman.

“We’ll still see each other after this, won’t we?”

“Yeah, of course we will.”

“I’m just afraid it will all change.”

“It won’t. Trust me.”

*Both stare awkwardly into the distance*

I know we talk about politicians getting into bed with each other, but this is ridiculous.

Listen, this is nothing to do with politics, but that Fianna Fáil clip put this song in my head.

If you’re anything like me, you have to listen to it before you can be a functioning member of society.

Apparently Let’s Get It On is something of a Fianna Fáil anthem.

That’s it from me, I’m handing over to Orla Ryan now. Enjoy the rest of your polling day eve!

Manchán Magan, the broadcaster and Green Party candidate for Longford-Westmeath, is targeting an often-overlooked section of the electorate.

Fianna Fáil’s health spokesperson Billy Kelleher had this observation about Enda and Joan’s tea date:

Meanwhile, there’s a protest taking place at Leinster House about a topic that hasn’t been talked about a huge amount during the election campaign: climate change.

Some people are REALLY looking forward to the end of pre-election coverage.

On his way back from the Grand Marshal announcement for St Patrick’s Day, Daragh Brophy took a stroll past Leinster House and met these two gentlemen.

Daragh Brophy taking over for the last few minutes here before the broadcast ban kicks in…

In case you were wondering what the radio and TV moratorium is all about, by the way – here’s Broadcasting Authority of Ireland boss Michael O’Keeffe:

“The moratorium remains an important measure for ensuring that fairness is achieved by the broadcast media prior to, and during, the period when citizens cast their ballot.

The prohibition of electioneering and references to election issues will allow voters a period for reflection in the final stages of the election campaign.

Essentially it means that from 2pm, radio and television stations will not be permitted to carry any content that relates directly to general election issues, including anything relating to the merits or otherwise of general election candidates.

Shocking that the police have waited more than 2 years to arrest him,If they knew 2 years ago, and were investigating him, including interviewing him last year, why wasn`t he extradited earlier?
Even more shocking, that he was implicated in a murder of a Garda 20 years ago and let live abroad for that length of time.
For the gardaí to leave this alone for so many years, and then pick him up at the time of an election, leaves a lot of questions unanswered.

Tommy it looks like the SF cover ups of alleged abuse are coming back to bite them like happened over time with the catholic church:

    http://www.independent.ie/irish-news/news/exira-chief-to-be-extradited-on-child-sex-abuse-charges-34484261.html

Now, I think like the many GOOD priests in the catholic church it would be VERY unfair to label or lump all SF people in with these abusers and call SF people as being all abusers and there are good people in SF, but like the church the moving around of abusers and cover ups is what people found to be totally wrong of both the church and SF.

@ Greg, I think you will find that there is nothing new in your post, nothing that the electorate was not aware of, I think you should be more worried at the timing of the whole thing, read my post above for clarification,
It`s a pity that your “Faux outrage” accounts for almost nothing, seeing as it is already in the public domain about these abuses, you should be more worried about the politics being played out behind this more than anything else

@motherofdevine I didn’t see your above post before I posted mine, as we must have been both posting at same time.

ok 2 things. First it can take many months to build a case and send to the DPP as you know. If they wanted to time it better it would have come out 2-3 days ago before today’s broadcast ban kicks in to allow as much damage? So that’s that dealt with.

As regards the killing of Gerry McCabe by this man if that was the case about keeping it for an election time, why didn’t they use this in 2002, 2007,2011 or before? Maybe they didn’t have enough evidence. As you know, the killer of another garda Adrian Donohoe is known to gardai and is living abroad also and may take time to catch and extradite him. Remember only recently Nazis were caught and brought to trial from the 1940s. So justice will win out eventually, even if it takes time.

But its a good thing to catch and arrest anybody for abuse no matter who they are, right? Please can we can both agree on that?

pgm you are correct. If FF knew about the abuse and covered it up they should be dealt with and highlighted also, same with FG, labour AAA etc. I agree with you. Not arguing that.

But SF and Adams has known about cover ups and abuse already and DID cover it up. I don’t want to name that person ( and would be unfair to bring his family into this and like I said it would be unfair to lump all SF people in the same as people tried to do with priests) but you will know who I am talking about and is within the SF community.

Greg, in relation to the link you put up. If the allegations are proved to be true, well he should be thrown in a jail cell and may he suffer for doing that to a child. The worst crime anyone can commit, but as usual you use abuse cases for political point scoring and try to link SF to this. That is like saying the case last week where Bill Kenneally who is related to three generations of Waterford TDs including former Fianna Fail TD Brendan Kenneally and who was jailed for abusing teenage boys is the fault of the FF party.

“We all know Gerry Adams was one of the leading figures in the IRA for a long time and it is no surprise he denies that, for to do otherwise would leave him open to criminal prosecution and, probably, civil suits.
We also all know of the complicity of Gerry Adams in legions of IRA atrocities, atrocities that probably would have happened anyway, with or without him.”

On Wednesday, 17 February on the People’s Debate, from the Louth/Meath East constituency, Vincent Browne said the following:

“Gerry Adams joined the IRA in the 1960s. He was a prominent person in the IRA when the provisional IRA was established. He became Belfast commander of the IRA in 1972. He was commander of the IRA in the period when Jean McConville was murdered, and her body disappeared, but I understand he had nothing to do with the disappearance of her body. A number of IRA members were executed during that period and their bodies disappeared, among them Seamus Wright. ”

Vincent went on to say Gerry Adams was interned in 1972, and again from 1974 to 1977.

From his release in 1977 “he became the single most important person in the IRA. Although he was very much involved in the IRA, and implicated in many of its atrocities, it is almost certain many of those atrocities would have happened had he not been there. But he also was a prime mover in the peace process. ”

“Although he was responsible for many deaths, as leader of the IRA for such a long time, he also saved a lot of deaths (sic) by bringing about the peace process “.
“The only reason he’s not here tonight is he knew certain questions would come up. He has a nerve to complain about inadequate coverage for what he has been saying, his utterances. He had an opportunity, a platform, to be here with us tonight and he has declined it.”

VB is a very wise man.

Politicial policing, gardai throwing women into metal bollards and on the ground during peaceful protests, property tax, water tax, giving revenue permission to raid your wages, social welfare and bank account. Cronyism, nepotism and an inept leader whose strings are being pulled by Germany and Brussels and at the same time is a wannabe dictator. Here is some information for those interested (Public Domain of course):

The letter for each TD when the Dáil was dissolved, you will note how it tells them to check the Guidelines document on Termination payments for years of service. (I gather many TDs will have looked at this for obvious reasons)

    Doc on Dissolution: http://www.oireachtas.ie/parliament/media/tdsandsenators/afterthedissolution/Summary-note-from-Clerk-to-Members-on-dissolution-2016.pdf

Then, in the Guidelines (amongst other information) is Page 4, outlining the termination arrangements.

    Guidelines Doc:
    http://www.oireachtas.ie/parliament/media/tdsandsenators/afterthedissolution/Dissolution-Guidelines.pdf

What I find incredible is this, (and we already know it), is on the Dissolution document, we have this:

“The Members Bar and Visitors Bar will generally operate as normal. Credit arrangements will be discontinued for TDs on dissolution. Members will be issued with a final statement and outstanding balances must be cleared within 30 days.”

Not just the fact of the bar in the workplace, but the bar in the workplace that passes legislation that affects you, me and everyone else, where it can be argued, that voting for Acts and Bills can be done under the influence of alcohol!

This governments policy is not to increase income tax, but what we will do is introduce a property tax and then we will introduce a water charge through the guillotine without debate in the Dail or inquiring of the ability to pay. OK so far, we will then increase prescription charges by 400% after that we will increase car tax and then abolish the phone and electricity allowence and we will then increase the enviromental tax on coal and briquettes what we can try then is take the medical cards we might get away with it, and then we will scrap the death grant you see that looks better than increasing income tax or the tax 12.5% we charge inward investment companies. Basically we can screw the elderly and those less fortunate in society.
