Got to thinking last night why would the US would be using Shannon for military use – and suffer the condemnation and diplomatic fall out, when they could fly easily fly the Atlantic and land in either Greenham, Mildenhall or, Malam in the UK, bases each of which are the size of Shannon Airport and Shannon combined – and which also have US customs on site? Are we egging our own self importance a bit here in the bigger scheme of things and making a mountain of a mole hill – just a thought

What a joke. If you don’t pay a fine, it should be doubled and taken from your wages or benefits. Sending someone to “jail” or a waiting room in the jail for 20 mins shows how stupid and wasteful and pointless our legal system is.

Ridiculous waste of tax payers money driving them down from Dublin to Limerick in garda car & then for just couple of hours time (presumably they got garda escort back again). Jailing costs a huge amount of money – those who are ‘not a threat to society’ should get useful community service tasks to be completed & not costing tax payers more money in jail.

Where they sit in the Dáil is irrelevant. They’re common criminals and procedure dictates they travel separately.

What if one got violent and injured the other, the state would be liable.

And if transported together, there’s a 1:1 ratio of Garda to suspect. One could easily fake illness and leave the other in the company of only one arresting officer. Injury, mishandling accusation and escape risk.

@Drew In 1916, based on what you say, ‘common criminals’ stepped up to the plate and started this country on it’s road to independence. Do you think they should not have done what they did in 1916?

I clearly realise it’s not exactly the same thing, but protesting for what you believe in is simply an instinct in many humans. We should never put down people who believe in something, particularly when huiman rights are involved.

If those of 1916 didn’t ‘break the law’, as I mentioned yesterday, David Cameron and the queen would be our rulers

If you’re going to trot out that old argument. I’ll gladly trot out that members of IS were standing up for what they believe in three weeks a go in paris, as were their predecessors 15 years…

There’s a right way and a wrong way to stand up for what you believe in, and when you’re an elected representative and have more of an outlet for you causes than any other citizen…. IN THE DAIL. Have been given the full democratic chance to raise your concerns, and the majority simply DO NOT AGREE.

It’s shocking (& embarrassing) reading comments here how ignorant people are in relation to what is going on in the world. Clare Daly & Mick Wallace had nothing to gain by climbing over that fence other than highlighting a potential abuse of a refuelling agreement with US by transportating prisoners through Shannon. If that is true then they are doing a huge service to the country.

Using the word potential is not a statement of fact. The fact is there’s three, yes three massive air bases in the UK, far bigger than Shannon town and airport combined. And faced with such diplomatic fallout and embarrassment, why would you land in Shannon and exorcise the Irish/American vote for starters. Beginning to think this notion is a molehill.

They are principled politicians. The ones who belong in jail, including those high fliers named and shamed by certain tribunals, get away scott free. I preferred watching the footage of the two TDS climbing the fence at Shannon than those nod and wink politicians on the Primetime programme scooping up the phantom cash and indicating how they wanted to be paid for favours rendered…

Dgar. They had Publicity to gain for themselves. And that’s why they did it. Has members of the Dail the could have made an Official request to the Authorities in Shannon Airport to inspect the facilities. But that wouldn’t have gotten them any publicity. So they put on Hi Vis vests climbed over a fence fully in the knowledge that they would get themselves arrested and knowing they would get no where near any US plane.

Rosa parks wasn’t taking a wage as a sitting member of the government at the time though was she ? You can be an activist who thinks the law doesn’t apply to them OR you can be part of a democratically elected government and use the system you were voted in to to effect change . The system you take a wage from. You can’t undermine the very system you are getting paid to be a part of and not be called on it I’m afraid. Again the rule of law is all we have. If you think you are above the law for whatever reason then you are part of the problem not the solution.

The Americans have a lot to answer for.
When I was young, regime change by the CIA was the order of the day in South America where they installed many “friendly” “capitalist”,murderous, dictators (Pinochet,Chile etc).
Now it’s the middle East where relatively benign dictators (Gaddafi) and their families are murdered in their beds by American bombers.
    Well done Claire and Mick.!

Even if you don’t agree with the beliefs or even like the personalities of Mick Wallace & Claire Daly you have to commend them for standing up for what they believe in. Too many politicians are sedentary letting too many tools make obscene decisions instead of standing up for the people that elected them. The fact you spend less than 2hours in prison for failing to pay a fine speaks volumes on our process and procedures as a country but also the level of resources that are wasted each day taking this action. I’m sure there were many people in the same situation as Wallace and Daly yesterday that had to go through this ludicrous process when they genuinely cannot pay a fine.

Daire. We are not Neutral. How hard is it for people to understand that. “Neutrality” is not in our constitution or is in any of our legislation. As a country we are just “Non Aligned”. But even that is not technically the case as we are members of the EU’s Fast Reaction Force. And our Special Forces troops regularly train with it’s NATO counterparts.

Herself and Mick Wallace and just jokes. They both are elected officials meaning they believe buy into and profit from democracy. They get paid it’s not voluntary work. You can’t say that you believe in the democratic system in Ireland and actually are elected into the system and then go renegade and commit criminal acts in order to effect change in government policy. If you don’t agree with government policy then you need to use the system you were elected into to make change. This is what democracy is all about. They really are taking a wage from a system they clearly don’t respect or believe in. They clearly think it’s ok to force change without gaining a consensus by criminal acts. They certainly didn’t ask me why I happen with that policy and I live in the Shannon region. So they are elected in a democratic system and get paid for it but choose to ignore it when it doesn’t suit their personal agenda. Thus makes them no better than any other political who chooses to abuse theur powers and undermine our hard won democracy. No moral high ground here Clare.

Jumping a fence in Shannon airport is not courage . In fact I would suggest they don’t even have the courage of their own convictions. If you want to be an activist be an activist but don’t be a hypocrite and take a wage from the system that you clearly don’t respect or believe in. In fact a system that by your actions you are trying to undermine. What’s sad is they and you think it’s courage. It’s not . Also if you didn’t just hop in to comment on topics that fit your one agenda you would know that I used my own name on here for years until another commenter came on with the same name so I changed mine. I left my picture so I would still be known. Also personal attacks and vague insults like silly are only a response used by people who can’t argue on points raised. The rule of law is all we have . Once you think you are above the law you become the problem not the solution.

What an extremely poor example this sets, especially when it’s a person of some civic responsibility. Should have their arses kicked out of government.
