Two Healy-Rae brothers elected to the Dáil

Michael is bringing brother Danny from the Kingdom to Leinster House.

THERE WILL BE two Healy-Rae brothers in the 32nd Dáil.

Michael Healy-Rae was returned to the Dáil in the Kerry constituency yesterday afternoon – and he will now be accompanied by brother Danny.

The independent candidates had adopted a canny strategy of dividing up the constituency for supporters, asking for voters in specific parishes to vote No 1 for one brother and No 2 for the other – and to reverse that pattern in other areas.

Michael Healy-Rae had a stunning win in the first count yesterday, capturing over 7,000 votes more than the quota. He took 20,378 first preferences – the quota was 13,213.

Danny Healy-Rae was elected on the second count with a total of 13,826 votes after transfers. He had had 9,991 votes in the first count.

This was this morning:

This was yesterday:

mhr Celebrations as Michael Healy Rae is voted in. RTE RTE

This was the map published by the Healy-Raes in local newspapers during the election campaign, asking voters to assist with their election strategy:

healyr Facebook Facebook

They followed this up with an outreach on social media:

Michael Healy-Rae TD / YouTube

The strategy paid off handsomely, with Danny Healy-Rae saying yesterday that the brothers made “no apologies to anyone for representing the people of Kerry”. He said:

There’s been a lot of talk of representing the nation and that we’re not good for the nation, but the people of Kerry are part of the nation. And we’ll have to fight for those people and we make no apologies for that.

On his re-election yesterday, Michael Healy-Rae had a warning for the “smart alecs” in Dublin now that the brothers would be joining forces in the Dáil.

Some of the smart alecs in Dublin who may have picked on me in the past. Well, you know what? They’ll have to pick through him to get to me.

It was people voting on a local level for people who have served the community well when nothing has been done on a national level. If the national government does nothing people will vote for action and call them what you want but Michael got the single largest percentage of vote out of any candidate in the entire country.
Maybe they just outsmarted a lot of people.

That is what is wrong with the Dail and Ireland. This us V them attitude. The Dail should not be concerned with local matters but what is good for the country as a whole. If done right the health care, education, housing, social protection etc would be the same no matter where you live in Ireland but this attitude and the corruption of both the Dail and the civil service prevents this from happening

Bring on the inevitable Kerry jokes. Yet Tipperary sent Michael Lowry back to the Fail i.e. the most crooked man in politics today. Wallace the tax evader got back in Wicklow. All the Healy Rae’s can be criticised for is doing the best they can for their constituents.

Perhaps if rural areas were less marginalised and investment were spread more around the country you’d see a lot more engagement in “national” politics from these regions.

You can blame all of the other parties (especially Labour and Fine Gael) for landing the Kerry voters with the most ineffectual candidates in the country. Kerry didn’t even recover during the boom years. Tralee’s got several empty factories, that have been empty for years, and Listowel hasn’t even got any factories. During the Celtic Tiger years, every town in Ireland seemed to get a new hotel, even if one wasn’t needed, but not Listowel, a town that actually needed one. Jimmy Deenihan’s poster slogan was “keep your TD local”, and the fact that he’s on a knife-edge on the candidate list proves that his being local doesn’t make much difference to the voters.

That is where we differ on our caring, I care about citizens everywhere, in Oz Canada, the families in hotels, kids going hungry, people worried can they keep their homes, not about the roads or any of that. To me MHR is a vote for austerity, check out his voting record in the dail. (Healy-Rae missed two-thirds of votes in his first Dáil term, despite being signed in for his expenses on each day a vote was taken) when he was actually there

Julie, there’s a very simple way of ensuring that people like the Healy Rae brothers don’t get elected on the parish pump ticket – implement policies that ensure people in Kerry (and other areas outside the Dublin commuter belt) have economic opportunites (and don’t end up in places like Australia); that they have services which most Dubliners take for granted such as roads, a post office, garda station, schools, reasonable access to medical facilities etc. The Fine Gael backroom boys discovered that talk of a recovery across large parts of Ireland was a myth. That’s why the wheels came off the FG wagon in these areas. It also goes some way to explaining why Kerry returned two Healy Rae’s.

Julie, I’m pretty sure that Kerry people are interested in the future of Ireland as a whole, Kerry people just want their share of that future. Caring for the future of Ireland is caring for every county, not just the densely populated areas of Dublin, Cork and other large cities.

Ron.. The big guns in Dublin are closing down Garda Stations and saved fcuk all in the process. Post offices too. Broadband is a disaster. So many want to leave the small villages cos they are empty and live in Dublin where all the facilities are yet there arent enough houses. I dont agree with parish pump politics and the national interests should be served first but it shouldnt be at the expense of the rural towns and villages.

There’s another side to this which people seemingly refuse to address preferring to think of Kerry/Tipperary/Donegal folk as uneducated yokels caring more about potholes than the state of the country. That is that all of those places are marginalised areas feeling unrepresented by government decisions.
Rather than blaming the locals for making the only voting decision they can which will ensure representation why not blame the ruling parties for continuously applying tiered policies and project investment which bring no benefit whatsoever to those outside of Dublin or commuter areas? Lowry and Healy Rae have both in the past done deals with FF led governments for very specific investments in their area, the problem is more why those areas can only be fairly represented through backdoor deals via cowboys when numbers allow rather than investment being spread evenly across the country from the major parties.

I agree, though the solution is more representative politics and investment not for people from places like Kerry to disregard local politics and elect someone who’ll sit quietly for 5 years toeing the Dublin centric party line.
I mean even on a very basic level of the 20 FG/LAB politicians involved at some point in a ministerial position throughout the last government 11 of them were from a Dublin constituency. People need to feel the benefit of what national politics can achieve for their area over local before this will change, right now that’s a hard sell.

Look every constituency has its issues when your in the west of Ireland you want politicians who are going to do their best for the local area ie improve infrastructure and create jobs this works the same in the likes of Dublin and the commuter belt as it does everywhere else. I think some people east of the Shannon forget that. Some TD gets elected in the likes of Mayo and goes off up to Dublin and doesn’t help the people who elect them is sure to have a short dail career, that’s the theory but I see Enda is back in so what would I know
