Public asked to lay flowers on graves of Magdalene women for Mother's Day

At least 1,663 former Magdalene women are buried in cemeteries in Ireland – many in unmarked graves.

A NUMBER OF events are taking place across town and cities in Ireland to honour women who died in Magdalene Laundries.

The Justice for Magdalenes Research (JMFR) charity is calling on members of the public to visit graves and lay flowers for the “women who lived and died behind convent walls”.

At least 1,663 former Magdalene women are buried in cemeteries in Ireland, many of whom are in unmarked graves.

The events are at different times through today, starting at 11.30.

This is the fifth year for the annual Flowers for Magdalenes events. As well as the laying of flowers at graves, there will be poetry readings and songs.

“Ireland’s Magdalene women form a very important part of our cultural heritage and have previously been hidden in the shadows of Irish cultural memory,” the organisation said.

    10k on the streets? At any one time, there are 220 – 240 people sleeping rough.

    @Peter Cavey: aye true enough however the folks in hostels get booted out at 7am and don’t find out if they’ve a bed the following night till 10pm. Long days with nowhere to go. The joys of the freephone system

    @Martin Connolly: I don’t know how they can put people out on the streets at 7 a.m. on a freezing cold wet day, it’s sickening to say the least!

    @Gus Sheridan:. It’s not like homelessness has only become an issue in the past decade. If blame is to be handed out to political parties, then you’re going to have to list every party involved in Government since the foundation of the state. That’s how long it’s been an issue.
