"A phony, a fraud" - it's panic stations for the Republicans as Mitt Romney takes a major pop at Donald Trump

The 2012 Republican presidential nominee’s outburst is being seen as a sign that the Republican party is deeply concerned about Trump’s meteoric rise.

photojoiner Mitt Romney and Donald Trump PA PA

FORMER REPUBLICAN WHITE House nominee Mitt Romney excoriated Donald Trump as unfit to be president this afternoon, in a deeply personal attack that exposed party panic at the billionaire’s political success.

Baldly stating that “Donald Trump is a phony, a fraud” Romney said his party’s frontrunner “has neither the temperament nor the judgment to be president”.

Romney offered a litany of pejorative descriptions of Trump, saying he was greedy, dishonest, bullying and misogynistic.

His outburst is highly unusual in a party that has long sworn by Ronald Reagan’s ’11th commandment’: “thou shalt not speak ill of any fellow Republican”.

But Trump’s shock electoral success has provoked utter panic among the Republican establishment, who believe he will destroy the party if he wins the nomination.

Warning of “profound consequences for the Republican Party” Romney said that “if we Republicans choose Donald Trump as our nominee, the prospects for a safe and prosperous future are greatly diminished”.

Grassroots anger

It’s as yet unclear what effect Romney’s intervention will have on Trump’s meteoric rise.

The real estate mogul has defied expectations in winning nine of the 15 state-wide primary contests held so far, garnering more than three million votes.

Using seemingly unlimited free media coverage, Trump has tapped into deeply felt grassroots anger at the party leadership.

Romney was quick to scotch suggestions he may use the speech to back a rival or throw his hat into the ring.

“I am not here to announce my candidacy for office,” he said.

I am not going to endorse a candidate today.

Romney heavily lost the 2012 election to incumbent president Barack Obama.

Diplomatically, he listed Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio, and John Kasich and said “one of these men should be our nominee”.

Even if you don’t like Trump you have to admit it is nice to see the Republican establishment get a good kick up the arse.

Trump threatens the high paid jobs in Ireland. Big style. He will tax (big time) the pharmaceuticals produced in Europe (let’s face it, here!) and imported back into the US and try to drive big pharma back to the USA. Technology is trickier, I’ll await his elaborate plan. Fact is…he wants to make America great again. Prepare for much less fiscal spaces among the European Union. The social welfare will be first to go and people will be left homeless and to fend for themselves. Anyone who has been to Chicago and San Francisco will understand exactly where we are going…

Gavin, He might do that – the cost of medication for Americans would go up significantly though. I think he’d incentivise return instead.

“try to drive big pharma back to the USA”

Try being the operative word. If he gets in all he will do is show us exactly how little power the president has. We will be watching a 4 year reality show that has the power to end the world. Get the popcorn.

Dunno, Chrome, Firefox, Yandex all able to view it on my machine.
An excerpt: “Some of the themes from Trump’s sober and concise endorsement of the candidate will ring true to those following the current presidential race, but on Thursday it’s perhaps more interesting to look at Romney’s response to the endorsement. The former Massachusetts governor began with a statement that could be read very differently in retrospect (“There are some things you just can’t imagine happening in your life. This is one of them.”), but his praise for Trump was generally effusive.

“Donald Trump has shown an extraordinary ability to understand how our economy works,” Romney said, citing Trump’s record as a job creator. And, he concluded, “it means a great deal to me to have the endorsement of Mr. Trump.””

On Thursday, February 2, 2012, Donald Trump endorsed former Massachusetts Governor and failed Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney for president.

Following brief remarks by Trump, Mitt Romney then heaped praise on Trump saying:

“Donald Trump has shown an extraordinary ability to understand how our economy works and to create jobs, he has done it in Nevada and across the country. He is one of the few people who stood up and said China has taken jobs from Americans. We believe in free trade but we have to have a President to stand up and not allow people to cheat day in and day out.”

If anyone’s a corporate phony it’s Romney. The man wouldn’t know the meaning of the word conviction. Trump has hit upon two key issues that should resonate with Europeans as well. Firstly illegal immigration. Trump is not anti-migration, he’s anti illegal migration. There’s a big difference. Secondly, unfair trade. China gets almost free access to EU and US markets, but our exporters are hit with tariffs and taxes. How is that fair? And it costs millions of jobs in the West. Trump may be what we need to sort out some of these big time issues, as “establishment” politicians seem paralysed, or more likely, bought off.

Obama is the only 2 term President who has had open perpetual war for his whole presidency, despite promising at every year state of the union to end the wars.
I haven’t heard of Trump threatening any other nation, he most likely will do a deal with Putin to back down from Poking the Russian bear which the U.S has been doing for the last 20 odd years.
I don’t buy that simplistic answer.
But I am still wide open to be persuaded.

I doubt the world will get any more peaceful if Mrs. Clinton gets elected. Look at her Middle East record. The only other non-warmonger is Sanders. http://www.counterpunch.org/2015/02/11/the-warmongering-record-of-hillary-clinton/ There’ll be at least another four years of misery for Gaza if she is elected.

If Mitt Romney says Trump isn’t fit for presidency that says it all tbh. The candidates for the Republican nomination are too extreme in their views and it’s detrimental to their country, like they care. They are furthering the division of ethnic/religious groups in America. Our politicians are bad but these republicans i e. are on a different level- in a bad way
