This is what reading looks like when you have dyslexia

A developer has created code to show non-dyslexic users what reading is like with it.

IT AFFECTS READING, writing, spelling and speaking but properly describing dyslexia to someone who isn’t affected by it can be difficult to convey without witnessing it.

One developer Victor Widell decided to take the description from one of his friends who has dyslexia and visualise it.

Using Javascript, the code can be applied to any site by going to Github, but there is one website ready-made so you can gain an idea as to how the condition affects reading.

“A friend who has dyslexia described to me how she experiences reading. She can read, but it takes a lot of concentration and the letters seem to ‘jump around’,” he explained. “I remembered reading about Typoglycemia. Wouldn’t it be possible to do it interactively on a website with Javascript?”.

dyslexia Github.io Github.io

Whether people feel this is an accurate reflection of the condition is up to debate. One user on Reddit who has dyslexia said while it’s accurate ”this is a more extreme case”.

To the people saying this isn’t what dyslexic people see… DUH! Nothing will ever show you normals exactly how it truly feels to read while dyslexic. But this is damn close! The point is to give you normals a little taste of the struggle we have to endure, especially as a kid trying to learn how to read!

Push and Pull signs on doors and right and left are two of the most frustrating day to day things for me. But what the hell dyslexia it my biggest disadvantage , but by far it is also my biggest advantage and we all have something .

While I’m not dyslexic I did my thesis on the subject. It depends on the language as far as I’m aware and phonetics within the language. Road signs also must be difficult since they are all uppercase this makes it hard to distinguish the shape of each letter also high the contrast of colour between the text and its backdrop like on road signs isn’t helpful for people with dyslexia going on research I’ve read.

There seems to be a lot more technology out there to help at the moment. I found this page on The Dyslexia Association of Ireland web page ~ http://www.dyslexia.ie/information/computers-and-technology/access-to-text/

Also this page on British Dyslexia Association page talks about visual stress ~

    http://www.bdadyslexia.org.uk/dyslexic/eyes-and-dyslexia

It also has a Parent section. Good luck. Some of the best people in the world have dyslexia.

To call people who don’t have dyslexia ‘normals’ is inferring that those who do have it aren’t ‘normal’ is a bit stupid to be honest.

Speaking as someone who is dyslexic I have no problem in this context admitting that I’m not normal. I’ve all but overcome it now, but when I was younger I had to employ a number of reading and writing mechanism to allow me to do what other children could do without them.

@ Tony “Stop crying like a big girls blouse …” The statement that proves your attitude towards women and gender equality. Not only that but worse still the attitude that promotes the ideology that men shouldn’t talk about their problems. The number one reason that has driven 5,995 people In Ireland between the year 2001 and 2012. to take their own lives. The vast majority of whom are young men.
    http://nsrf.ie/suicide/
I bet you are really proud of yourself for promoting the ideology that it is better to die than talk about your problems.
Your comments on The Journal articles where you defend the catholic church and their record on pedophilia, your comments on LGBT related articles, bereavement articles, children’s rights articles, to articles on every type of disability show you up for the truly evil man that you are. The sad thing is that you are proud to be evil. And the irony is that you actually think that you are a true christian. Unbelievable.

You are also so thick that you think everybody is taking the piss out of me when your constant homophobic responses to me on every article get more read tums then all other comments put together. But of course you will respond to this comment by saying you don’t care about red tums and completely miss the point that it is not me that people are taking the piss out of but rather you. We all know that you don’t give a damn about what any gay people or their children think. But that’s not surprising coming from a person who doesn’t have the intellectual capacity to think at all. And assumes that he knows what’s best for children even though your ideology is the complete opposite to every single child care expert.

Believe it or not dyslexic is spelt phonetically. The letter “y” is the phonetic sound of the short vowel sound “i” same as the sound of the ” y” in the word Mammy. It also appears in your name Cynical. Incidentally phonics and phonetics are two separate things. For many dyslexics the problem with long words is with syllabification. The particular nature of a persons dyslexia is different from person to person therefore correct discovery of the person’s core dyslexic nature can result in the correct solution being found. The Alpha to Omega by Bevè Hornsby, Frula Shear, Julie Pool published by Heinemann is an exceptionally good program which addresses reading, writing and spelling. It is supported by Dyslexia Action. Hope this is helpful to someone out there who is dyslexic. Finding in children which perception is their strength at an early age using the Thackeray Profiles is also useful. This identifies strengths and weaknesses by analysing visual perception, auditory perception and tactile perception and may also be helpful.
