This is what Google has chosen to be its 1916 Easter Commemoration Doodle

The winning design was drawn by 12-year-old Mia Buckley from Summercove National School.

THE ‘GOOGLE DOODLE’ that will be displayed on the search engine’s Irish homepage on the centenary Easter Monday has been chosen.

This is the handy work of 12-year-old Cork student Mia Buckley from Summercove National School.

This is part of Google’s 2016 commemoration programme and students were asked to design a Doodle along the theme of ‘Ireland is…’ to show what Ireland means to them.

The winning design is entitled ‘Ireland is a land so green’ and integrates themes of sports, farming and music into the famous Google logo.

Speaking about it, Buckley said:

Ireland is a land so green with grazing cattle to be seen. Steeped in rich history with music and sports so fine. I love this Irish home of mine.

A ceremony was held at Google’s Dublin headquarters today where she was presented with the prize of a €5,000 scholarship towards her third-level studies as well as a Chromebook. Her school will also receive a €10,000 technology grant and her teacher will receive a Chromebook.

She beat out competition from 74 other regional finalists to have her design chosen.

Among the entries were others that celebrated alternative elements of Irish culture.

This entry from Maríosa Bryceland of Loreto Community School in Milford, Donegal is entitled ‘Ireland is inspiring’.

On her choice of imagery, Bryceland said: “Ireland should be known for more than leprechauns.”

This entry entitled ‘Ireland is Marine Life’ and was done by Inez Gadula from Loreto in Foxrock and is based on a sea theme.

“When I think of Ireland I think of the sea because Ireland is an island and I live by the coast,” Gadula says.

Ah, take it easy! The remit for the children was to design a doodle based on what Ireland means to them … not from an adults perspective. They reference to their own experiences, not ours. Well done to all the kids

The title for entry was “Ireland is…” meaning it had nothing to do with the 1916 rising. Also I wouldn’t expect young children to do drawings about the rising… Seems a little dark…

No it isn’t , are you living in the 60s or did you sleep through the Celtic tiger? There are loads of sectors bigger than agriculture which is a relatively small part of the irish economy.. Examples are; financial services, pharmaceuticals and alcohol.. But sure don’t let facts get in the way of a misconception.

The theme was “Ireland is…” and what it means to a child today. The resulting 75 finalists all had unique beautiful interpretations and well worth looking at : http://www.google.ie/doodle4google. Although I fear the beautiful gay marriage artworks may be a step too far for some of you, still looking backwards.
