St Paul's Cathedral priest resigns over Occupy London eviction plan

Giles Fraser has stepped down in support of the protest camp, after arguing that they should not be forcibly evicted.

A SENIOR PRIEST at St Paul’s Cathedral has resigned over plans to evict protesters camped outside the landmark church as part of the Occupy London movement.

Dr Giles Fraser, the canon chancellor of the cathedral, announced this morning on Twitter that he would stepping down, saying: “It is with great regret and sadness that I have handed in my notice at St Paul’s Cathedral.”

Fraser has backed the protesters after they set up camp in recent days, issuing a statement on Saturday that he was “firmly supportive of the right of people peacefully to protest”. He confirmed to the Guardian this morning that he had resigned after divisions on whether to have the protesters forcibly evicted.

The cathedral, one of London’s top visitor attractions, closed several days ago after advice that the camp was making visitors “unsafe”. However, the Telegraph has reported that it is likely to reopen on Friday after “significant” changes to the camp’s layout.

The Occupy London protests are part of a global movement that started with Occupy Wall Street in New York and has spread around the world, including to Dame Street in Dublin.

The specific targets of the demonstrations vary between countries, but the movement is generally aimed at ending the dominance of political and financial elites. Activists at Occupy Dame Street have demanded an end to Ireland’s bank bailout and the exit of the IMF from our economy.

Indeed, he must have been reflecting on the story of Christ in the Temple kicking out the money lenders and decided that he was going to take that example.

No worries though, the bishops version of the bible has that bit removed.

They’re allowed marry so they don’t attract as many pedophiles.

But great to see a Christian with real Christian values.

Paedophillia is not caused by not getting married – this has been established long ago. There are lots of people who don’t get married and indeed are celibate but they don’t go around abusing children. Why is there such a lack of facts and knowledge about so many things by people who should know better. There is so much tripe thrown out by people who are just rehashing what they think are facts. A very small percentage of priests abused children. Those who did are criminals and should not be allowed live in the same country as children let alone near them. On the other hand the number of abusing fathers, brothers, uncles and neighbours, as well as sports coaches and others who work with children is much higher and people tend to ignore them.

Is he not a member of the Church of England? Don’t see why he should have to resign over child abuse occurring in a different country and carried out by a different branch of christinanity.

This article is NOT about child abuse. Why don’t people stick to the subject and stop taking every opportunity to have a go at the catholic church. I wish there was sincerity and honesty in the debates here.

Tim, that quote from the bible is not left out or removed. Facts are facts and truth is something that seems to be the thing being left out or removed.
